    Nope, it was the memory expansion. She checked the cartridge first, turned it back on, didn't work, then realized that the memory expansion wasn't in all the way, pushed it in, it worked.

    That seems more like a crooked cartridge than a memory expansion issue. Having 48 ocarinas is a side effect of "cartridge tilting" while the game is writing new save data.
