Alright, so I was blasting some of the dust out of the luggable this evening, and I decided to go ahead and check out the hard drive... turns out, it's 120 MB hard drive with an interface called ESDI. Wow, that hard drive's a beast!

Uhh...frankly, not really. I know of a couple games for 3.1, but I know very little software from that time. as for 98, a lot of modern software either still works with 98 (SE, usually) or has older versions for it. Opera is probably the newest that you can get on 98. Oh, and you should definitely install KernelEx on 98 so you can run some newer programs.

When I go to replace the BIOS battery, I'll be sure to take some photos and show you what the connectors look like.
And so much for being able to use my old joystick with the suitcase...

Not to worry, though... I'm contemplating interfacing the joystick with my PS1 racing wheel, in place of the missing pedal controller.

*The IBM "luggable" sits proudly on my desk, with its keyboard folded down. Still need to get a new BIOS battery and create what is called a "reference disk" to actually get the thing working, and possibly put Windows 3.1 on it*

I know I just got done PM'ing you, but there's something I missed when writing the PM:
I previously bought a Hitachi 500GB SATA hard drive for my MacBook from Amazon, and I'm having far fewer problems (and I mean like 99.9% fewer) with it than with my old 320GB. So, Hitachi is another good brand I'd recommend.

To be honest, I'm decent with the command prompt as well. To grab my network configuration and navigate around the file system is all I really care to do with DOS. Sometimes I'll compose a simple batch file or write a short QBasic program, but that's just about it. Everything else is either done with Windows or Mac OS X. X3

Yeah, it was pretty crazy to mirror my iBook's desktop to a green monochrome monitor. Crazy in a good way, of course.

Have you ever connected a video game system to an old RCA-based computer monitor?
I've done just that with an old Apple II monitor, and was able to play Super Mario Bros. in green monochrome. Even Game Boy emulators on my iBook seem almost authentic on a green monochrome monitor.
It proves that I can think of some pretty crazy things when it comes to technology. X3

Hehe. I've thought about a few interesting things:
    - DVR in a VCR
    - DVR in a VHS tape (actually, this was KYA's idea)
    - New computer in old case
    - A full entertainment center (maybe sans the speakers) in an old TV console

Surprisingly, yes it does work, although the case that housed it was really yellowed and busted up, and thus I recycled the case. Who knows? I might be able to somehow integrate that Super NES into the VCR. And what would REALLY be cool, is using the display panel on the VCR as a backlit Super Nintendo logo while the system is turned on. I'll look into it more when I'm done with school in a few weeks.

Hm, not really. There isn't really anything in a VCR you can salvage that could be put to use in another project. If you have two very similar or identical VCRs and know a thing or two about soldering and electronics, perhaps, but otherwise, nah.

Yeah, I recently had to say goodbye to my 13" TV/VCR combo, my monaural VCR, 3 PS1's and 2 NES's... a sad day, it was. On a positive note, as a result of donating all that stuff, I now have room for a "luggable" IBM PS/2 Model P70. It's got a 386, red monochrome display, built-in keyboard, internal hard drive, and a 1.44 MB floppy drive. It's pretty awesome for a suitcase computer from around 1988, and worlds cooler than the Osborne 1. :3

This is exactly why I have no tolerance for seeing them spam Google search result pages. Fortunately, Google has a simple solution for this: the good old "-inurl:" operator. With it, anyone can exclude any domain from their search results. I use it all the time when I don't want BrotherSoft or WareSeeker (both of which are serious offenders in terms of Internet security) committing the same web search crimes as World News. *pointless evil laugh*

Fortunately, I did find a workaround for transferring files to my IBM over LAN: I had forgotten that a web server protocol was installed along with Mac OS X, so I just whipped up a quick web site with links to the files I wanted to transfer, and I was able to "download" them to my IBM's desktop.

On a more awesome note, I found out that the IBM is strong enough to play MP3's using WinAmp.

    Ah, sweet.

Speaking of business-class laptops, I finally got Windows 98 to recognize my PC card Ethernet/56K Modem adapter... now it's just a matter of figuring out how to set up file sharing between my MacBook and the ThinkPad.
*has hopes that Windows 98 in VirtualBox will interface with Windows 98 on the ThinkPad*

Normally, I think HP products are pretty bad for durability, but a lot of their business-class laptops are quite well made. This thing has great build quality and feels nice to the touch.

I bought a laptop for $75. It was a little bit of a fixer-upper, but I definitely think it was worth it, especially when it's more powerful than a netbook, with a nice screen and optical drive.

I'm just glad I bought my 5-year-old MacBook from my brother for $200 rather than $2,000 for a new one....

Not really sure, although I think Apple keeps a closed fist on the iPhone so they could try to control their customers. I'll put up with their totalitarianism for one year, and after that, I'm disappearing from the grid.
