The Touch Cover works surprisingly well when you think about it. It's pretty nice, pretty colourful, and best of all, acts as a "lid".

    Ah, Firefox.

I've noticed that Internet Explorer's memory usage is highly dependent on the amount of installed system memory - if there's lot of them, expect it to use them well, but if you're memory-constrained, seeing the memory usage below 160 MB with 5 desktop tabs is not impossible - in fact, it's feasible. I think other browsers may or may not be like that.

I"m using a heavily optimized browser called Palemoon. It's a modified version of Firefox that's optimized for 64-bit systems. It might not actually help things, but it seems to, as pages are loading a lot faster now. I had the 32-bit version of it before.

Usually you only need the 32-bit and 64-bit, if applicable, versions of the latest Java platform (The "7" in Java 7 blahblahblah).

A 64-bit browser does not help, though, especially with regard to add-ons and extensions, and sometimes, scripting performance. What browser are you using?

Yep. Not that that's a bad thing right?
An aside, I found out the hard way that having multiple instances of Java installed can be a bad thing. Updated to the latest version and had the other instances uninstalled. Everything is running a lot better now. Also upgraded my browser to 64-bit, which might've helped too.

I'm beginning to wonder whether I need a dedicated graphics processor in my next laptop at this point as I've noticed that the 4th-gen Intel Core processors seem to have a good enough GPU to play pretty much everything but Company of Heroes 2 at 30 FPS+ at 720p. Hmm...

Hmm. Do you know any good wifi range extenders? There's one free wifi hotspot just barely out of range from my new place and was curious as to the best way to increase range. Signal goes from 1 bar to nonexistent at the moment. Signal is from a Dunkin Donuts across the street, and the manager there said it would be fine if I could get a connection that I could use it sparingly.

Makes me wish that I could have had a fixed line connection.

Oh well, maybe in a year, after my contract with the landlord ends. I'm considering renting an entire apartment unit or house outright so that I can do pretty much everything. Unlimited fixed Internet, home-cooked meals, TV and home entertainment options, setting own rules...

Expensive, though, without someone else also living together and doing it at the same time.

Funny how neither of my main cameras have a 4:3 sensor. My NEX-5R is 3:2 (APS-C), while my Lumia 900 is 10:7.

The fact that the 900 uses a 10:7 sensor means that you can actually end up with a wider FOV when using 16:9 instead of 4:3 (the default).

I've been reading many reviews for the Gigabyte GTX 660 while I wait for it to arrive. So far I'm very impressed with it. Pretty much everyone gets a maxed out WEI score in graphics with this card.

    Aaaand Intel excels at...

nothing. Anything is better than Intel to be honest - even a low end dedicated will do wonders with the CPU's power consumption, and the entire system, too.

I guess you could say that I dodged a bullet there with the 630M instead of the 7670M - I don't want stuttering, and I don't get any of that

    Also fascinating

According to this, ATI focuses mostly on speed bursts, while nVidia focuses on stability. Sure ATI can get better framerates, but framerate doesn't matter when the video itself is stuttering as a result.

I guess we all think alike xD

One thing I know is that going from Intel graphics to a 630M sure made the difference between "unplayable at low settings" to "30FPS+ at high".

Also, I just tested Darksiders on my laptop. No settings beside V-Sync? No problem, I can play it fine at native resolution @ 30 FPS+ anyway. Goes to show how you can pick any mainstream laptop and get away with it if it has dedicated...

Let's hope I can run Metro 2033 at low, at the very least.

Go with it - it surely can push much, much more than the 630M I have (that's good for 720p gaming) - yours should be able to handle almost everything at 1080p, so 1600x900 should be easy.

I'm trying to go as low cost as possible without sacrificing performance. Most of the GTX 660s are around $200-$250 these days. Only the GTX 660 Ti is still around $300, and it's more for overclocking, which I don't plan on doing much of.

And as for ATI, four failed cards in a row has lost my faith with them.

I've been thinking about this one actually: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125443

So what brand, then? The last dedicated card I had was a Gigabyte. GeForce 9800 GTX+ and that lasted very long. I think the GPU is still working, and it only needs a new motherboard to live within. Then again, I have only three PCs with a discrete, add-on GPU...

Are you planning to spend around $300? I like NVIDIA because of their drivers. That's what made me chose the 630M instead of 7670M, because, oh god, I don't want to bother with the mess that is Catalyst. Catalyst is still much, much better than Intel CP, though.

Then again, AM2 is dead-ended, so he's going to pretty much need a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM anyway. The Fusion's GPU solution is freaking nice.

Right now, if he wants to get real gaming on a comfy couch, it's going to be the A10 and a good motherboard for $200 or wait.
