Strange things seem to happen when you're away.

Some strange UK person that I don't know managed to sign up a UK Match.com account using my email address - I've nuked the account and am thinking of adding two-step verification of my email.

It doesn't seem like the nuked account was verified... Hmm... some guy putting a random email? I'm still being a bit wary with regard to this mess, though.

Good thing the unknown Brit hasn't made a mess yet.

It seems like Windows Phone uses a custom keyboard layout for Japanese "smiley" input - it gives you a menu first, then presents a grid, instead of dumping a pile of smileys right there.

Windows apps sure know how to conserve memory when given only two gigabytes of random access memory. Even on the desktop... 174 MB for six active tabs is impressive, as well as just over 100 MB for three large PowerPoint presentations open.

Oh, and by the way, do remember that the Sony A3000 is as entry-level as it can get - a low-resolution EVF and a low-resolution LCD, as well as the lack of any phase-detection autofocus. If you do get that camera, try to get natural with manual focus in the dark.

Or wait one year. Bargain basement, anyone? It's the lenses that you should worry about - these bodies that are available today are highly capable, especially if they are Sony bodies.

At $400 with the kit lens, it's a steal. I can't imagine how it'll be when it's $300 or lower - cameras tend to depreciate fast.

It's funny how I can skip all 7.1 headsets that rely on a true surround output soruce because I'm on a laptop and using them would mean either getting a USB sound card, plugging it in via USB and installing more stuff, or getting a docking station for my laptop. Hardly ideal.

Ever tried Razer Surround? It's a piece of software that's free-of-charge that mixdowns up-to-7.1 audio to something suitable for stereo headphones and headsets.

They work. It's like what I'm getting out of the 3DS XL, except much more accurate, and without audio quality hit (as long as you disable all the other "enhancements").

You know it's a different time when Nokia doesn't sell phones without a backlit colour screen simply because they got so cheap that using BW screens are... Well, yeah.

As for sunlight readability... Nobody is going to miss that, right? Nokia feature phones tend to be really bright...

Another fun thing about Windows Phone:

No Windows Phone has a resolution lower than WVGA (800x480)
No Windows Phone has a non-autofocus camera
No Windows Phone has a rear camera resolution lower than 5 megapixels

Makes you wonder whether they'll eventually loosen up. I hope not! They still can have cheapo phones at these mandated specs

Somehow, Windows Phones packing 800x480 IPS displays, dual-core processors, and a 5 MP autofocusing camera can be priced off-contract at $99 or less while demolishing Android equivalents. Hmm...

Or... Put it in another way, smartphone power draw is too high.

Speaking of which, a easy way to test flashes:

    Point towards operating fan
    Fire

If you see frozen fan blades in the resulting shot, your camera's flash is fast enough to freeze subjects even in the dark for a given distance.

The latter... hoo boy. Officially supported OSes IIRC seem to include Windows 98 all the way to 7 by the last add-on pack (remember, Vista and 7 were either in development or not exist when The Sims 2 was first released).

I'm actually rather... surprised at how they managed to get coding for an ancient-by-that-time OS.

It's a bit funny how much cash you can save on Internet when you keep utilising the dessert store's free Wi-Fi for a simple $5 fee for yogurt.
