    QuickTime used SoundCanvas samples, too.

SoundCanvas samples remind me of the QuickTime Music Synthesizer on my old Mac.

And you are correct: You'll need to get the Yamaha XG software synthesizer or a Yamaha XG-compatible keyboard to take full advantage of XG-formatted MIDI files.

I wonder what SoundCanvas samples remind you of? xD

I think these XG MIDIs that I have won't play properly on a regular synth.

For the most part, I think Microsoft Wavetable GS Synth does indeed use SoundCanvas samples. Not that it matters much, since Yamaha XG is my preferred software synthesizer...

As long as they don't bite me, I'm cool with turtles. I especially like Asian box turtles, because of their beautiful color patterns. :3
The only things keeping me from having a turtle as a pet, are the costs of healthcare for turtles, and the fact that I presently have house cats. Don't want feisty felines to win the fight against fragile box turtles, if you know what I mean.

Plushies are pretty cool, although I haven't collected any since I was a kid. X3
But if I were to start collecting again, Flareon, Zoroark, Zorua, and Lucario would definitely be my first choices.

Never had much faith in Microsoft, even as I use Windows 98 on my ThinkPad. That's why you'll never see an XBox 360 in my collection. Original XBox, that's another story.

As for the original Zorua art, I got 'em from Floatzel.net. I must say, the pictures on VR's sister site are so high-res, that recoloring Zorua could never have been easier. :3

Yeah, the DX7's been discontinued since 1986. I wish Yamaha would reissue the DX7 like Moog had done with their latest Taurus synth bass pedals, and the Minimoog.
I always thought the GB Sounds were sampled like all the other instruments for HeartGold and SoulSilver...
It's an interesting fact that almost all of the music in DS games are MIDI-based. I know this because I've run a nameless DS ROM (for which I own a physical copy) through a sound extraction program, and I saw that, in the extracted folder, there was a "Wavesample" folder, a "Sequence" (MIDI) folder, and a "Stream" folder. Alas, I have no 3DS as of yet, so unfortunately, I'm unable to compare interpolation.
Random fact about the NES audio output: with a bit of modding, you can actually output audio in stereo.
  45. Twiggy
    May 8, 2012 07:02:30 AM
    Twiggy
(If you've been paying attention, you should now realize that the reason GB Sounds doesn't sound like the real deal is because of the DS's PSG shortcomings - while it has more channels, its programmability is reduced.)
  46. Twiggy
    May 8, 2012 07:00:25 AM
    Twiggy
As for the 3DS, not much is said about it, aside from the fact that it has dedicated audio hardware and probably does up to 24 channels. Oh, and for once, audio sample interpolation.

Listen to the System Settings music in the 3DS and the 3DS Transfer Tool music on any DSi to hear the interpolation differences and the quality improvements it brings to the table. They use the exact same music.
  47. Twiggy
    May 8, 2012 06:56:22 AM
    Twiggy
    And finally, the DS.

16 not-quite-hardware channels (actually mixed in ARM7), capable of 8-bit, 16-bit PCM and ADPCM natively. The last eight acts also as a PSG synthesizer, 6 square and 2 noise channels. It seems to be of a simpler make than the GB/GBA PSG. Audio codecs are now actually feasible and usually output as a stream of PCM16 audio. Nonstandard ADPCM variants are also seen, as well as Ogg Vorbis. The DSi Music app can play Advanced Audio Coding files. (You know how good that is, right?)
  48. Twiggy

    Twiggy
Wow, and I'm off rambling off retro sound hardware.

The GBA brought in 2 more DPCM channels, 8-bit. Pretty much no one used them as is - mix them in software! Audio quality depends on a lot of factors, such as programmer expertise, CPU time left over, sampling rate (can go anywhere from telephone-quality to overkill 65 kHz), size of samples (stored in system RAM), maximum amount of PCM instrument channels (in the hands of amateur sound programmers, every single one takes a slice out of the CPU time available. Now, I wonder what Camelot and Square Enix later on did...)

    http://victoryroad.net/album.php?albumid=509

By the way, these waveform pictures? It's actually generated from a Game Boy game. The Game Boy's PSG isn't as simplistic as the NES'.

    Let me see...
The NES can only do mono output out of the box, while the GB can do hard L/C/R, per channel.
The NES has five channels - 2 square/pulse, 1 triangle, 1 pseudorandom noise, 1 DPCM. The GB, on the other hand, had 2 square/pulse/sine (can be swapped in the middle of a waveform, like the images shown), 1 does anything except can't be used as a PCM instrument channel (triangle, check, sine, check, square, check, extra harmonics, check, limited FM, check, 4-bit PCM (one-shot), check...), yet another pseudorandom noise channel, and that's it.

The GB was certainly more flexible, given that we have to stick to stock hardware. However, the Famicom's sound was expandable. We know how that went.

The best part about the SoundCanvas Sound Set is that it's 16-bit uncompressed.

Throw in ADPCM, and we're looking at 0.82 MB. Too bad it isn't, huh?

(No wonder Microsoft Synthesizer sounds so retro - someone was being really, really conservative with the sample sizes! Windows 98's floppy mess will only get worse if they tried to squeeze in higher quality samples.)

    Seiji J. Konokama
    Why thank you. :3

That certain synthesizer happens to be the legendary Yamaha DX7, which is an FM synthesizer that's almost reminiscent of the Sega Genesis. The DX7 was widely used throughout the 1980's, and probably its most recognizable sound is the electric piano, which I use quite frequently in my remixes.

That's pretty interesting about the Roland SoundCanvas, although I prefer the likes of the Yamaha XG software synthesizer. XD
  61. Twiggy
    May 6, 2012 04:24:16 AM
    Twiggy
Also, tons of thumbs-up for your remixes and demakes XD

I also see that you get tons of mileage from a certain synthesizer.

Microsoft Synthesizer's Sound Canvas samples are ancient at this point I think it was mostly the exact same set since, what, 1996?

"The GM.DLS file contains the Roland SoundCanvas Sound Set which is
    protected under the following copyright:
    Roland GS Sound Set/Microsoft (P) 1996 Roland Corporation U.S.
The Roland SoundCanvas Sound Set is licensed under Microsoft's
End User License Agreement for use with Microsoft operating
system products only. All other uses require a separate written
    license from Roland."

Not to mention at 3.28 MB, there's not a whole lot to say about the sample quality. Makes you think of the memory-constrained early PCM synthesizers.
