Well, to make the picture itself transparent you go to Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. Then delete the parts of the picture that you want transparent. Then do Save As... and save it as the filetype you want (You can make the file name have the extension instead of going through the list: Just save it as VRBanner.PNG or something) and click save. A window should pop up with a load of checkboxes. I have mine set to Save background colour, Save resolution and Save colour values from transparent pixels. And... err... Yeah, click save and that's it, I think.

What filetype do you want to save it as?
