Haha, sometimes I just hope that the process doesn't end up taking the better part of a year. Or two. Or a decade. I suspect there might be a lot more red tape for foreigners.

    Haha...

Know any suitable templates for me to start with? Even though it won't be anything done quickly I think I might want to have a good way to get started on the entire thing.

Probably going a bit too early in this regard for now, though. Right now I'm just thinking that I probably have very bad timing...

Not being an employee that flips jobs quickly would help a little bit, too, so I probably won't be immediately jumping ship. How long is the delay between applying for jobs in the USA and finally being confirmed, usually?

While we're at it, normalize them to 96db. Don't worry about it complaining about some minor clipping I'm just not OK with anything above 96. (16-bit audio files have a 96 dB dynamic range.)
  26. Twiggy
    March 31, 2014 08:48:35 PM
    Twiggy
I think I deleted the original files, but if you still had the 128K files on your PC, try running MP3Gain on these files. Bogus files will have no volume stat or have an absurdly high dB.

Out of curiosity, do you still have the original masters (so to speak)? I'd love to have a set that isn't 128K MP3. Preferably 320K MP3 (for compatibility and battery life).

I was going through music in a neglected folder, cataloguing and normalizing. Turns out the tracks in The Best of Aura Force are... uh...

I had to reencode them. Some of these MP3s aren't what they seem to be.

    Hmm...

    Windows 3.1: needs Protected Mode
    Windows NT 3.1: needs a 32-bit processor

It's funny how the OS goes from "mainly 16-bit with some 32-bit" (Windows 3.1x) to "mainly 32-bit with some 16-bit" (Windows 98 SE) to "32-bit" (the rest)

It's a shame going 64-bit would ruin the upgrade chain since it's not possible to go across architectures.

So I was thinking about it in the shower, and I just wondered whether this is even possible for a Windows 3.1x computer:

    1. Change hardware components to meet Windows 98 Second Edition's requirements if not already so
    2. Upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition
    3. Change all hardware but the hard disk drive from 3.1x-era hardware to 2003 top-of-the-line hardware; if RAM > 1 GB, install 1 GB or less
    4. Install all drivers
    5. Image the hard disk and put it into a <127GB HDD, then extend the partition
    6. Upgrade to Windows XP
    7. Install remaining RAM
    8. Upgrade to Windows Vista
    9. Upgrade to Windows 7
    10. Upgrade to current hardware
    11. Upgrade to Windows 8
    12. Upgrade to Windows 8.1

    a. Would such an upgrade chain leave behind Windows 3.1x stuff in 8.1?

Plenty nice. Desperately needs a cover, as suggested by even elderly women.

It's like they know. The screen is very nice despite the resolution - in fact, I'm actually glad that this thing has a screen resolution of 1366x768 so that web content is 1"1.

Haha, that game takes only 25% of CPU (saturating only one thread), and it seems like that "not doing work" counts as "idle" on my laptop's ultra-low-voltage Core i5. Intel Core-series processors are scary efficient when it comes to heat while doing nothing much. Also, the biggest heat generator in my laptop is the separate GPU, and it has two GPUs - one integrated to the CPU itself and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 M. Deus Ex is lightweight enough to run with everything cranked up to the maximum at 1024x768 (my laptop's screen is 768 pixels tall) on the Intel HD Graphics 4000 and still not break a sweat in hitting 60 FPS.

I completed it a few days ago, and... it's certainly an interesting mix of... an FPS, an RPG, and it certainly felt very nice even without hand-holding.

The music is the icing on the cake. If only there was a way to play the music outside of the game.

    Twiggy
Since I'm thinking of ordering the Minolta Maxxum 5, I think the tripod has to be able to hold the weight of a compact film SLR.

At least film SLRs are pretty light as cameras go - they're just slightly heavier than a mirrorless camera as long as you aren't looking at professional-grade bodies.

    Still...

I'd like to have a tripod that is weighty enough.

I think I might need a shoulder bag. Probably going to ask them "what can fit a film SLR, its lens, a Sony NEX-5R, its 55-210mm lens (the 16-50mm is pancake), at least 2 135 film cartridges, flashes, batteries (at least 2 CR2s and 1 extra InfoLithium), and a tripod.
  84. Twiggy
    May 12, 2013 09:07:40 PM
    Twiggy
    Hmm

I was thinking of something way more portable, since I don't want to end up carrying kilos of equipment. (My NEX kit still comes in below 1 kg, considering both the camera, batteries, SDHC card, kit lens, and 55-210mm.)

APS-C digital cameras have come a long way :3
  85. Twiggy
    May 11, 2013 11:16:29 PM
    Twiggy
    Hmm...

I think I really should get a camera shoulder bag or something. The bag I have right now is only for the camera itself, the flash, and its kit lens (that's collapsed by design). I need space for one more lens, so...

Shopping time? Might as well as get a tripod. The smaller kind for compact system cameras.
  86. Twiggy
    May 11, 2013 07:54:48 AM
    Twiggy

  87. Twiggy

    Twiggy
    Hmm...

Looks like I'll just bother with a 5.
  88. Twiggy
    May 10, 2013 09:07:40 PM
    Twiggy
    Hmm...

Now, let's see the choices for me to get an SLR experience...

The 5 would be cheapest up-front, but it would be film and costs will rack up eventually.
Getting a new Sony SLT would be pretty expensive relatively, but it'll be mew and digital, though it's APS.
I can also bolt on an EVF and an A-mount adapter, complete with mirror, on my camera, though it is a power sink and looks unwieldy. Duper expensive, too!

I want to get into A-mount in some way, though. 50mm/1.7 is too good to pass on!
  89. Twiggy
    May 10, 2013 10:14:09 AM
    Twiggy
I'm going to have to settle with the 5, though, because that is semi-recent (2000), in better-than-excellent condition at KEH, cheap, and actually uses batteries that are sold here (CR2).
  90. Twiggy
    May 10, 2013 10:01:07 AM
    Twiggy
Holy moly, you can swap film cartridges mid-roll and reuse them on the 7? ISO swaps just got a whole lot easier... if you ever need it. (I probably won't)
  91. Twiggy
    May 10, 2013 09:17:53 AM
    Twiggy
I think I might be getting a Minolta Alpha/Maxxum/Dynax 7 or something like that.

Then again I probably can only afford getting a warranted-by-KEH 7xi.
  92. Twiggy
    May 10, 2013 05:25:05 AM

  93. Twiggy

    Twiggy
    Hehe. Sergal?

I really, really want to get a vintage Minolta Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha, because I know that whatever lens I use with it, I'll be able to use it later on a Sony DSLR or adapt it officially to my NEX-5R. But Canon is tempting me with a 50mm f/1.8.

On the other hand, though, nobody here sells 2CR5 batteries, and I'm having a look at some Minolta bodies that can take AAs or CR2s.
