What disappointed you in Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver?

In spite of the new games being extremely appealing for all Pokemon fans (me being one of them), it is undeniable that every game must have something disappointing for some person or the other. The same goes to Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver. So, is there anything in particular which disappointed you?

I personally was slightly disappointed at some of the Pokemon sprites, such as Pinsir's and Scyther's. However, that didn't ruin my extremely positive view upon the games.

(You can have a look at the Pokemon sprites here)

Re: What disappointed you in Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver?

The 3-D. It's awful in this game.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but there are spots where I should easily be able to walk on behind something, but I can't! *Hopes they fix it for the European release*
Also the fact that you can't fly directly from Johto to Kanto, or vice-versa.

You can fly to every spot from the Pokémon League though! Still, that's only 2 spots out of the whole map.

Cat333Pokémon December 1, 2009 12:25:11 PM

Re: What disappointed you in Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver?

I thought that limitation on the flying was pointless, because you can just fly to the Pokémon League then fly again to the place you want to go to.

The fact they didn't change any of gym leaders teams, no mention of Agatha, Lorelei, or Leaf, the put way to many pokemon in the safari zone, the Gen IV evo's didn't get new sprites despite being in the Johto Dex, and the thing with the golden leaf.

This. but the new gyms are awesome (Bar Whitney's gym - it's a victim of the rubbish 3D).
Also, can someone tell me what the heck the 2 people in Jasmine's gym are saying to you!? (There should be trainers there)

Re: What disappointed you in Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver?

Some people might consider my grievance to be pointless. I didn't like the fact that you can begin trading with DPP immediately after you get a Pokedex. I really think that ruined a good challenge and it allows for some unfair sequence breaking. Having said that, I am a Metroid looney, so I should be happy with sequence breaking. But not in this game.

I dunno, only things I don't like that I saw are probably some of the sprites and that they they Krystal out and the Ruins of Alph unown signal "????" for some reason I thought it sounded better on G/S/C

Oh god yes, I was HUGELY disappointed when I heard about that. And really, nintendo needs to go out and find something a bit less goofy for the characters to wear sometimes.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE MY FRIEND~!
I thought she looked like Mario too xD Must be the poofy hat, and suspenders. =p

What I think pokemon should do though is have multiple character options. Like have two male characters too choose from and two female characters to choose from, so everyones happy~! ;3

I have nothing against Kotone, as I think it is just a very minor issue. Plus, she doesn't look that bad to me.

Kotone isn't bad and I like the costumes of both Gold and Kotone. I was disappointed with some sprites and the fact that the Battle Frontier didn't change a bit! Although the gym leaders got their teams stronger, yet I expected more from Nintendo. I also hate the fact that Celebi isn't a Wi-Fi event, unless I am wrong.

Miis are always such a missed opportunity. They would make awesome custom avatars for Nintendo games. They should be an alternate avatar in every game.

Yeah, but what if people make somewhat-vulgar Miis, like the Mario Kart icons?

What disappointed me? The game was too short after I finished it.

Battle Frontier has bored me since Emerald for some reason. I should try harder to get into it.

As for the Pokéthlon, I keep forgetting that exists. I often just fire up the game, do a bug-catching contest, and power down.

I've onlly really been a fan of the Emerald frontier - I don't like the new ones.

Same with the Bug Catching Contest - Is it only on certain days?

On-Topic
I don't really like the new items screen. It's a lot better than the D/P/Pt one, but when I haven't got my stylus out and just want to tap it with my thumb, I sometimes hit the wrong thing. :/

Re: What disappointed you in Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver?

Awww im a big fan of the battle frontier =w= Very useful way to get items and challenging as well. I just wish they would have a building that allows 6 pokemon. Ive beaten all the battle frontiers brains on platinum but getting to the 2nd battle with them to get the gold pass is near impossible with only 3 pokemon, since eventually they'll be a trainer that counters it completely .-.

This.

I think highly detailed 2D sprites would be way better then this 3D **** that looks like it came from a 3DO or an Atari Jaguar.

I think they should just all-out the 3D like Colosseum (except with Stadium-level graphics because it's the DS) instead of just this grid-style 2.5D.

YES! I am really pissed that Nintendo just slapped the platinum battle frontier into johto. I really wanted either new facilities or brains, and a remixed battle tune really isnt enough. I hope that Celebi is a wi-fi event, because I always find it kinda awkward going to the Toys-R-Us events. Luckily you can get the signal from the parking lot :D

Seadra January 1, 2010 04:28:14 PM

:/

After beating Clair, the player can obtain level 100 Pokemon and they will be obedient. Like, wtf? :/ That depletes the purpose of beating the other 8 gym leaders. Just trade in Infernape from Pearl and blow through the game.

I agree. I'm trying not to abuse this function, but I might try to trade in a Gligar early on in the game so I can get my team set up. I was also considering putting in an Eevee or a Yanma for Espeon or Yanmega, but I'm less for that one since you get Eevee relatively early on.

Also, I'm still bothered the combat doesn't go a bit faster without turning off the animation. Shouldn't we choose to attack a Pokemon and have the attack do the damage at the same time (like in other games) without waiting for the attack to finish? I say a choice next to the regular style and no animation.

Ningamer January 5, 2010 08:36:32 AM

There are loads of wild Pokémon, and if you enter a battle with a Pokémon with intimidate, it takes nearly half a minute to run. Even longer if both Pokémon have intimidate, and even longer if one (or both) of them is shiny.

I agree with this in regards to what I'm disappointed in as well with the combat.

Come Game Freak! A little more stream-lining! It's fine that we can do our math homework while playing Pokemon, but at least give us the option to make things a little more fast-paced!

AuraKshatriya January 5, 2010 05:49:02 PM

xD To be honest, one of the disappointments for me was the lack of a VS Sprite Animation before battle for Pokémon Trainer Red. It just seems completely out of the ordinary to not give him one, especially when they gave Sakaki one.

Note:To avoid confusion, "Sakaki" is called "Giovanni" in the English games.

Someone on Deviantart made one that I think could work quite well as an official one, though:

http://da-suspect.deviantart.com/art...rait-137324029

Flare Soru January 7, 2010 10:43:52 AM

The "walk behind things" is also in the gen4 games.

------ <---walking limit

------ <---Actual back of the building

It's annoying.

And I love making the hikers look like Zombies. xD (in gen4)

as far as HG/SS goes, I haven't gotten it yet. So IRDK anything...

One of my biggest complaints with Gen IV. Why do sprites have to stretch by the sides of the screen?! Why not leave them like the old games? They're sprites, they're not meant to be 3D.

Shadow January 8, 2010 02:39:44 AM

I am also slightly disappointed about the absence of the Pokémon Contests. Although I am not a fan of those contests, I still think that HG/SS would've been completely perfect if they were added.

Charizard98 January 20, 2010 02:56:27 PM

That all you're three starters aren't lv.100 magikarps thats move sets were flare blitz, sky uppercut, fly,and close combat.:(...and a focus sash:(. Nah! I wish that you can do all the regions from Kanto to Shinnoh. I know that would keep you occupied for HOURS. I can't wait for a Pokemon handheld experience where you can go through all the regions. THAT...WOULD...BE....AWESOME! I would love it. Too bad.:(

iherdulikemudkipz January 30, 2010 02:42:01 PM

the more work u have to do. i mean 16 BADGES?!?!?! r they serious?! isnt 8 enough?

FreezeWarp January 30, 2010 02:57:21 PM

I bring this up because I saw it roughly mentioned, but Platinum's lack of polish in the movement permissions really annoyed me - buildings that, when you are far enough left or right of them, clearly have a good two steps of open space, however you can't access that area. This was polished near perfectly in Emerald, and was reasonable in Diamond/Pearl, so we kinda went backwards. I'm assuming HGSS is better.

Some problems that, from the news, I've found slightly annoying are the fact that the Safari Zone was brought back so en masse (it may as well be impossible to actually make heads or tails of what Pokémon can be found where with what items).

I also was considerably disappointed by the fact that the game doesn't use weather effects very well (for someone who has actually played the game, I would love you to contradict me on this).

Ayunnuya April 1, 2010 12:56:24 PM

The GB player, although a genius idea, was off every now and then.

Heck, 16 isn't enough for me.

What disappointed me would probably be the low-leveld gym leaders.

7th gym leader only has a highest level pokemon of 34?! Shame on thee...

E.P.T April 2, 2010 10:34:36 PM

The only thing that has dissapointed me is that they got rid of the "pedo man" outside the celadon gym i remember back in the day he said something like"this gym is great its full of ladys/women" now he says "this gym is great its full of strong trainers" that is one thing i miss from the old school Gold/Silver compared to the new ones.....

...That also ticked me off. Now we have to play the new game, Voltorb Flip, which is even more random than the slots. At least in the North American version. In the Japanese version, the slots are there. And you can buy coins with money!

What has disappointed me?
T~T That I can only battle Erika on Sunday mornings. Otherwise, I would make it my duty to battle her at least once a day. 8D;

Also, Cycling Road transitional building, your hat outline kind of melts with the desk outline. Though, my character is Lyra, so I'm not sure if Ethan/Gold has the same problem.

SK April 4, 2010 03:24:16 PM

I'm disappointed that you have to fly to Victory Road to go from Kanto to Johto or vice-versa.

I'd rather do it in 1 trip...

mariothecellist April 4, 2010 03:47:05 PM

The Gym Leaders need to be harder and there needs to be more trainers to train with. I went through the entire Lake of Rage and Team Rocket's hideout by that tree in Mahogany just to train for Jasmine (fighting every trainer). One that was finished, my Pokemon were Lv. 28-30. It took me a few tries to beat Jasmine still.

LiteTheIronMan April 13, 2010 08:25:54 PM

After playing Voltorb Flip a lot, I'm not mad that they took slots out, rather that the payout in Voltorb Flip isn't high enough. It should've been higher to compensate for the fact you can't buy coins.

Also, it's beginning to tick me off how I can't just track down the Gym Leaders for rematches. I need their phone numbers! I'm bored as hell and I need to grind levels!

Jaredvcxz April 15, 2010 03:48:49 AM

Tiny maps, and a lack of quest reminders. Sometimes I have no idea where to go, too, because the game sucks at this stuff.

GuildmasterWigglytuff April 15, 2010 03:51:56 AM

To you. I certainly don't like spending an entire minigame clueless of how to control my Pokemon correctly while everyone else wins. The other two I played were okay, but one was recycled out of Stadium 2.

I liked the contests mainly for the strategic part of them, which meant you had to put some thought into what you did. The Pokeathlon just lacks that.

Medals seem to equal ribbons, here (but I don't have any so I'm not totally sure), and Rare Candies are essentially worthless given that they don't boost your Pokemon's stats, just their level. Also, ribbons in D/P just so happen to help out unlocking the Ribbon Syndicate, which can help a lot with evolving Pokemon by happiness.

Such as evolutionary stones and items that you can't normaly find in the game.

LiteTheIronMan April 18, 2010 02:11:56 PM

A few aesthetic details also made me a bit dissappointed.

1. You have how many buttons on the DS that don't serve any function? And only two items can be assigned to a face button? I would like to have my Bike, Super Rod, and GB Player all assigned to three different face buttons.

2. Music doesn't change from day to night like it did in DPP. In DPP, this gave a bit more of a realistic "oh wow, time actually passes while I'm playing this game" feel. Although you could tell when the sun is rising/setting/not out, it still ruined the experience a bit for me with the exclusion of specific themes for times of day.

3. This isn't really aesthetic, just... Why is it so hard to get in contact with Gym Leaders for rematches? In Platinum you just went to the Battleground and they'd alternate. Now we have to hunt them down for their numbers and call them at certain times of certain days.

Why can't we just go up to the gym for rematches?
You need to know that I'm am very lazy and hate doing stuff like hunting down the optional stuff (and yet I'm doing a "catch-'em-all" run).

And I hate rematching the E4 because I can hardly win because I am so low level when I get there.

They made the Fire-Trainers fat........ That hurt me inside.

Alakazamaster May 7, 2010 02:34:37 PM

Today I started catching Dittos, and noticed a huge flaw in the new PC system. It is now insanely difficult to re-arrange Pokemon based on numerical order, because you can't move a Pokemon to a box that is full. Before I could just keep switching Pokemon with each other, but now I must find a new way to do it. Plus re-arranging Pokemon just seems awkward in general with the touchscreen. :/ They even got rid of the multi-grab feature, which was incredibly stupid. It is now extremely tedious to move Pokemon in bulk.

Buizel456 May 7, 2010 10:18:15 PM

So called "Game Corner"
Spam Calls
Have to call Gym Leaders on a certain day, on a certain time (Usually Noon, Wednesday for me...WHICH IS WHEN I'M NOT FREE) and I hate waiting, honestly

LoPun May 10, 2010 04:17:56 PM

HHmmm..

nothing actually...wait. I got one.
I use to be disappointed at Dragonite's sprite. But then it grew on me.

Luxray13579 May 11, 2010 05:08:56 AM

Actually now that I think of it, I hated some of the HG/SS sprites, but you can never make them to everyone's liking.

Nightshade Darkrai May 11, 2010 06:24:27 AM

One of the biggest grievances I had was how easy the Johto portion of the game was, and by exstension how difficult it was. Most of the Trainers (including Gym Leaders) were pathetically simple to defeat, and the wild Pokemon? Don't make me laugh. As a result, I would breeze through large portions of the game thinking that this is way too easy. However, when I get to an opponent who's level is higher than mine, grinding becomes infuriatingly difficult because there was no one strong enough to give my Pokemon decent XP, despite the fact that all of my Pokemon except one was traded over from Platinum (I trade my entire team over to each new game I get as level 1 infants) and thus received an XP bonus.

I can understand why some people lament the loss of the slots. Voltorb Flip should have been an addition, not a replacement. However, I've never liked the Game Corner in any case, so this is one oversight I can ignore.

The Pokeathlon should not have replaced the contests either. I will always prefer to compete in the athletic events as opposed to the show events, but removing contests entirely makes little to no sense.

The Flying issue is also annoying, and I don't like the way the 2.5D graphics make it difficult to know what I can and cannot walk behind. I also found some of the dialogue difficult to swallow, and cutscene immobility has always frustrated me, but these have always been a part of the games, so eh...There're other issues, but those are my biggest.

The game did a lot of stuff right (I never want to bike or Fly anywhere because I love having my Pokemon follow me) but it also made a lot of mistakes I didn't think it would. I hope Nintendo learns from these before Black and White go out.

This.
And the fact that the 3D was not very good on DS.

How easy it is to be very underleveled at the 8th gym

That's just your fault entirely.

Frikkin running into a wild pokemon every 5 seconds!!!

The Spirit of Time May 15, 2010 03:31:50 AM

The Johto leaders weren't bad. They were quite challenging. What is currently disappointing me is the short routes between the Kanto leaders. My Pokemon are so under leveled and I can't find a place to rain properly!

Well, it made it into your sig, right?

A pet peeve of mine is when one complains about something directly related to one's acttions. To blame underleveledness on the game design is stupid because there are many opportunities to level grind.

LoPun May 15, 2010 01:41:10 PM

Eh. I didn't like Jolteon's sprite. That's basically it, and there are a few sprites I really hated...but I can't think of one other than Jolteon's. Dx

Ningamer May 15, 2010 01:55:35 PM

Salamence's overworld is AWFUL.

I will agree that there are plenty of chances to grind. However, I will argue that there were not many chances to grind well. Throughout the Johto portion, I never saw a wild Pokemon outside of the Legendary Beasts who was much higher than level thirty, and most were in the twenties (unless I'm really remembering something wrong).

My point is, while it's perfectly possible to grind it takes a lot of patience to gain any decent levels against wild pokemon of that calibur. Most people will simply breeze through the game thinking they're on top of the curve until they get walled by a really tough trainer. That was actually one of the things that I found very annoying.

In every other game that I can remember, in order to be strong enough to defeat a Gym Leader you had to be a high enough level to run away from the wild Pokemon in the area, so in order to even get there you'd be fighting Pokemon that would nturally bolster your level as you trekked. If you managed to arrive and found yourself lacking, the Pokemon were strong enough to offer decent XP so you could grind. Not so in Gold and Silver, for reasons I stated above.

sandflapjack May 21, 2010 11:53:16 AM

I miss kris.
I would have even settled for a cameo.

RK-9 May 21, 2010 12:13:58 PM

Let me say this nicely and calmly...THE LACK OF TRAINING SPOTS. There are about... hmm... 2 places to grind for the elite 4. And they are both crappy. You can barely get EXP in trainer battles, you have to rely on Gym Leaders, which are impossible to grind for the Jhotto elite 4. When I got to the elite 4 in my 1st runthrough, I was a team of level 30s. NEEDS. MORE. EXP. *breaths in, and out* Im done.

TheRagingTyranitar May 21, 2010 01:49:24 PM

I always train at the Victory Road,it's a nice place.

Turtwig May 24, 2010 05:06:50 PM

What disappointed me was the way that you have to Fly from the Pokemon league then to whatever region you want to go to, Why not just fly on both regions without doing that???

Dilster3000 May 25, 2010 10:02:26 AM

The Game Corner, it was an Epic fail.
I checked out the Japanese Version, and it HAD a Game Corner.
For some reason the English version has a useless old man who wants to play one mini game with you.. grr.

Also, Victory Road.
No Trainers? (Ok I know this was also in G/S/C)
But some good training before the League would have been helpful.

Otherwise HG/SS is my Wife.

I have the Japanese version. To me, it looks like a Smeargle that gets high when you play. And it was taken out of the US/Europe versions because it 'encourages gambling'. Pfft.

Japanese are lucky that... whoever is judging this game, is easier on them.
If the slots in Hg/Ss 'encourages gambling', why didn't the slots in any other Pokemon game get removed?

~Joshers~ June 24, 2010 07:05:59 AM

Flying from Johto to Kanto, and the Moltres sprite ;P

Oh yeah I also didn't like the new game corner game... (You know with the voltorbs, lol)

EDITED by The Spirit of Time. Next time, don't double post. Edit your previous post. It can cause infractions.

The Spirit of Time June 25, 2010 12:08:20 AM

I hate the fact that Victory Road lacks trainers. I like to battle trainers.

GlaceonFanatic July 21, 2010 08:01:42 AM

I hate that you need to fly to the victory road and then to the other region your going to. You can also go to Goldenrod though and take the magnet train.

Idno58 July 21, 2010 12:20:41 PM

I was disappointed that the battle frontier was EXACTLY the same as platinum. Come on Nintendo, be a little more creative.
