Gen 6 censor?

So it's not exactly a secret that the Generation 6 nickname censor has some weird moments. For example, a few minutes ago I tried moving a Swampert named "fish thing" through the Transporter, and it decided something in there was offensive and blanked its nickname to the default one.

Anyone here got any good stories? (Or know what's offensive about "fish thing?" I can't find it in any list of known Gen 6 censored words S: )

It probably sees the "sh t" part as you trying to evade the censoring of that synonym for poop.

That's completely ridiculous, but then again you couldn't trade an unnamed Bulbasaur over the GTS in B/W so that may be the case. I'll mess around some more and see if I can make heads or tails of it. Might as well try breeding Curse onto it or something anyway, while I'm at it . . .

I know that Kakashi OT name on older games changes into Shiro*

For which i dont know what Shiro* stands for?

There have been many instances of the name "Spike" not being allowed, as that's a rather common name both for the player and the Pokémon, as many folks apparently have been using that name in-game for years.

Remember all, this game supports international interaction, so if you don't immediately see why a word is censored, it may contain an offensive word in a different language.

EXAMPLE: You cannot name your Ravioli, as it contains the word "viol", which...well, I'll let you look that up on your own if you really wanna know.

Makes sense - it'd be wise to play it as safe as possible if we're dealing with this kind of game and its online capabilities. It's kind of a shame, though, but guess we kind of have to put up with it.

Besides...I never encountered any issues, anyway.

It's funny how they don't prepare for obvious loopholes such as "Scrotom-W" :P

Dragonite January 14, 2015 06:43:08 AM

The problem with censoring bad words is that there are thousands of things that some, but not all, people might find objectionable, they're probably integrated with normal words like "fish thing" and the list is constantly evolving anyway, so trying is pretty much useless.

But maybe that's just me.

So a game udpate or two later, I went to the Name Rater and it did let me name a fresh Mudkip "fish thing."

Idk if they fixed the censor so that it doesn't catch things like

or if there was just a problem with the Transporter flagging things that don't need to be flagged.

In any case, my Swampert now has the name it's supposed to and all is well again.
