Spriting School of VR!

Ever see all those amazing sprites in people's Signatures and all over Sprite Shops? Tired of asking people to make them for you? Want to learn how to make them yourself?
Well then this is the place for you!

So, how does this work?
It's quite simple, really. Just post here in the thread saying you want to enroll in a class. A teacher will then take you in as their student soon after. Your teacher will be responsible for helping you improve your spriting techniques. You may only take 1 class at a time. Some classes require you to complete other classes, though. At the end of every class, your teacher will supply you with an exam. If you pass, you may go on and take other classes.

When you have passed 5 different classes, you may apply to become a teacher. You will only teach the classes you have passed, and may or may not be accepted.

Yeah. You may ask for an exam if you think you already know a certain subject, though.

There are many programs to use. I use MS Paint which /should/ come with your windows computer.
But there's also GIMP and Paint.NET that are free to download and use.

[TRDRS]PokeTrader March 2, 2011 06:54:56 AM

I guess that means I have to enroll too, so I will! I want to enroll into this Spriting School!

Most laptop have the program download on it already.

I do need some sprite help so I'm in with Infernos.

Alright. I'll start you off with Basic Recolors.

I've seen your sprites before, and you've got the basics down. So let's start you with something not as basic.

-Granbull as Minun
-Makuhita as Omastar
-Typhlosion as Zangoose

So you'd like to learn Infernoes?

NismoZ March 2, 2011 06:43:04 PM

Guess I'll enroll in revamps, since that's the kind of sprite I'm best at. :p

EDIT: never mind, misread that one post, I'll sign up for the revamps exam.

randoguy101 March 2, 2011 08:01:21 PM

mister out of state college professor here
I do hope you are teaching your most advanced students spriting from scratch. many great spriters never work on 100% original art simply because they were never told to do so, and it's a real shame we lose so many in that field

i downloaded a simple paint(i typed ms paint on google and i found a website and i chose the first one.)is this ok or i have to download another program?

RotomGuy March 3, 2011 07:49:54 AM

I would like to enroll as well please.

Aquablast March 3, 2011 10:04:17 AM

Yes I would like to take infernos. PM me so he can start.

LucarioMario March 3, 2011 11:45:27 AM

I would like to take the Basic Recolors class.

shinyarceus4 March 3, 2011 01:45:45 PM

I'd love to enroll, Ill take basic recolors.

Revamps require Basic Recolors to enroll, which you have not passed. I'll start you with a basic recolors class.
First some guidelines:
- Always save as .PNG or .GIF.
- Never save as .JPG
- When recoloring, always recolor lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc.
- Read the tutorial on the first page to learn how to recolor.

Now do:
Squirtle as Charmander
Metapod as Kakuna
Growlithe as Butterfree

Yes, I plan to do so. Thanks for your concern, though.

If the downloaded MS Paint works for you, then it's fine. I'm not one to tell you which program to sprite with.

The classes will actually take place here.
First some guidelines.
- Always save as .PNG or .GIF
- Never, ever, in any way save as .JPG. It destroys the sprites quality.
- Use at least 4 to 6 shades in Infernoes. You may go up to more, but they won't look as good.

Read the Infernoes tutorial on the first page and then do these.
Your first assignment will be.
- Monochrome Treecko (Black to White)
- Aqua Torchic
- Flaming Mudkip

Ah, Windows 7 Paint. I see.
All I can really tell you is to use the bucket fill technique. Replacing each color using the bucket fill. Shade by shade.

shinyarceus4 March 3, 2011 04:20:18 PM

Too late, done Pikachu-Marill manually. looks good for handmade first.

It's actually quite good for a first time. The only thing that really bothers me are the outlines. You have some gray outlines that don't belong to Marill on your Pikachu. When you recolor the outlines, you'll wanna have them be from the Pokemon.
http://iaza.com/work/110304C/iaza19056242779300.png
I circled these outlines in red. I also put your Pikachu's outline colors next to Marill's actual outline colors.

It's not that big of a problem to make you re-do it, just make sure you don't make the same mistake again. Anyways, finish your other assignments and then post them.

shinyarceus4 March 3, 2011 04:39:51 PM

Done with the other two.

http://iaza.com/work/110304C/iaza19056236502700.png
With the Magby, this isn't the case though. The outlines look fine and they "blend in" with the colors. They don't stand out much.
Why you used gray outlines on the Cascoon and not Magby, i don't know.

Now, next assignment.
Poochyena as Zigzagoon
Ponyta as Ekans
Monferno as Marshtomp

If you'd like, you may take in some of the students that posted here and teach them. As I can't keep up with 6 different students.
Or you can just wait for more to come in and post.

You seem to have gotten over your outline problem. Now, I noticed that when you recolor you don't recolor everything. For example, you didn't recolor the flames on Ponyta and Monferno. When you recolor you wanna recolor everything possible. Flames, markings, etc.

Make sure you do that next time.

Next do:
Pillowswine as Meowth
Dodrio as Seviper
One Pokemon of your choice as one legendary of your choice

The little drop tool that is circled is the eyedrop tool. Zoom x8 is circled as well. Zooming in x8 is just zooming in to the max. To zoom you select the magnifying glass tool, and then pick how much you want to zoom in.

Your paint should look like that or similiar.

All the sprites look good, and I can't really say anything is wrong with them. The outline on Snivy looks a little weird, but it's just Victini's colors.

Dunsparce as Murkrow
Yanmega as Salamence
Gyarados as Milotic
Lopunny as Gardevoir

How does your brother's Paint not have a zoom option? Every image editing program should have a zoom option as a necessity. Mind giving me a screenshot of the program?

Your sprites are good, you've got everything down.

your next assignment is:
Ledian as Arbok
Ariados as Spinarak
Goldeen as Clefable

The Squritle and Metapod are good. The only thing I saw wrong was the Growlithe. The only thing you really recolored was it's body. You kept it's mane and ears the same color.
http://iaza.com/work/110306C/iaza19056294460700.png

When you recolor you want to recolor everything possible. Tails, ears, stripes, etc.

Next assignment:
Mothim as Beedrill
Huntail as Gorebyss
Delibird as Spheal

Everything on the sprites look fine. You got the shading, outlines, and coloring right.

Your next assignments is:
Banette as Graveler
Exploud as Magnezone
Blissey as Sunflora

Like all your other assignments, this one was excellent. The only thing I noticed was that on your Lopunny's outlines, there was 3 blue pixels surrounding the green ears.

One more assignment and then you'll have an exam:
Ramaprdos as Charizard
Hippowdon as Blastoise
Latias as Latios

lucarioLOVER March 5, 2011 10:49:25 PM

it has zoom but it doesn't say how is zooming.i can zoom.
so how to recolor?the guide says zoom to the pokemon you want to take the colors.how to put the pokemon in the paint program?

Shiny March 5, 2011 10:57:48 PM

First you must save your sprites to your computer, then you open up Paint, go to "Edit" and select "Paste From". Once you're there, you must select the sprites you want to recolor.

I'll answer that while posting something else....
sign up to an image hosting site, (iaza requires no sign up) post your image, then get the link of it, then when posting, click post image, then insert the link.

Anyway, i'll have the sprites done by tommorow. I have to do homework today. :(

There's three white squares around the image when editing the image in Paint (On the bottom, bottom right corner, and right side), you drag those around to resize the canvas.

Hmm... I have Windows 7 Paint, so it might be a bit different from the version you're using, but this is what I mean by the white squares.

And you can only resize the image while editing it in Paint, so you can't resize it in an image hosting site or something like that.

They're all fine. With Slowking, it's fine if you reuse colors, it'll still come out fine.

The Banette and Exploud are fine. The only thing weird I noticed was on Blissey. It has some pinkish outlines on it's body that look like they're from the original sprite.

Well, this sprite has some problems on it. First of all, there's virtually no shading on it. No shading on a sprite makes it lose it's "3D" feel. It looks like the Shaymin is just paper. When you recolor, you have to keep the original shading. Don't add any, don't remove any.
Secondly, the outlines aren't recolored. You still have Shaymin's green and gray outlines on it.
If you look at everybody else's sprites, you can see they have the outlines recolored to blend with the newer colors.

Just keep that in mind when you recolor.

Everything looks fine, except it looks like you forgot to recolor a major part of Sazandora. It's "fur looks like it was left not colored. Like I told Rotom, it's okay if you re-use colors if you ran out of them.

Now for your exam:

DONE!

Tyranitar: I was clever with the belly and made the bottom part yellow, like Garchomp.
Shaymin: This was fun 8)
Arcanine: The reason the outline was all black is because Mightyena has 4 shades, will Arcanine was 6. So, I had to make the lightest shade.

BTW, you might actually wanna make a Re-Type class now you have a tutorial for it.

When you recolor you want to recolor everything possible. Tails, ears, stripes, etc.

You see, apart from the eyes, Butterfree only has the set of three colors, and I didn't want to use either. So I kept it the same.

Your exam sprites are all good. Congrats, you pass Basic Recolors!

What would you like to take next?

As for the Lucario, I agree, it could use some blue in it. It looks like he got covered in Cheeto covering. XD.
I can't really count it as extra credit, since extra credit is virtually useless in here.

The assignments are all good.
Time for exam:
Attack Deoxys as Groudon
Rayquaza as Kyogre
Heatran as Cresselia
Giratina as Dialga

The other recolors you did are very good also. My favorite is the Bayleef. it shows a good example of an advanced recolor.
The trainers are also very good to. They don't look like you just propped parts of dialga and palkia onto a random trainer sprite. The trainers actually go with the Pokemon, and the parts are fused good.

http://i53.tinypic.com/slsf0k.png

The sprites look a little better now that you added matching outlines.
And by shade I mean like the shadows. Sprites in general aren't just one color. They have shading used to give it a 3D type effect.
If you have trouble shading think of it as this: You have a light on the sprite and wherever the light is touching, that area is lighter. Where it isn't touching, that area is darker.
i.e.: A Wailord's back would be bright blue as the light is aiming and touching it's back. Whereas it's belly would be a dark blue as the light isn't touching or coming near it.

Shading isn't that easy to learn as a beginner. It requires practice and patience. I still ahve trouble with shading now a days.

Well, first of all, there is virtually no shading on this sprite. Like I said before, you must keep the shading on the sprites when you recolor. Don't add any, don't remove any. Secondly, the sprite has it's original outlines. When you recolor you must change the outlines to match the Pokemon's newer colors.

Alright. Infernoes may seem easy, but they require a LOT of patience. And I mean a lot. Some may takre up to half an hour to do.

ZAlright.

Well, first things first:
- Rememver to always save as .PNG or .GIF
- Never, ever save as .JPG
- Always recolor from lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc.
- Remember to always recolor the non-black outlines

Then do:
Tepig as Oshawott
Patrat as Lillipup
Pansear as Pansage

Haha, i know. :>

It seems you've gotten the hang of Infernoes. Now do:
Monochrome Metang
Aqua Golbat
Flaming Woobat

The outlines on Deino look weird. His main body is like a pure black outline. I don't know if he had those black outlines on the original sprite, or if you added them, but it looks weird.
The Sunflora is good, but the outlines around it's petals on the head look weird.
The Ledian is good too, but again, it has an outline problem. The outlines on it's wings are the problem. It's orange wing has blue outlines on it, when they should be orange.

And your sprites aren't bad. They're actually good for a beginner like you. I've seen worse than this. :3

I actually didn't understand the guide but by the pics I got something.
Dewott looks horrible.I hate it but I can't do it better.But what's a monochrome?I really didn't understand that.

Well, it seems like you've understood the whole concept to Infernoes. The main thing is the outlines and colors you used. On the Dewott and Tepig, you have black outlines from the original sprites still on it. In Infernoes you want the whole outline to be one color.

Assignment:
Re-do Tepig and Dewott
Icy Servine

i just noticed that the pokemon have outlines with different colors.so i decided to try to make colorful outlines.the marshtomp has red on his mouth.by accident i made the mouth black.then i made it white but it looked horrible.so i made it red.sorry

EDIT:by the way look what i made for fun

lol.do you like the balls?

Your recolors are starting to improve a lot. Next do:
Metang as Dragonite
Durant as Rapidash
Basculine as Gyarados

As for the Pokeballs, they aren't exactly the best. The fused parts are fine, they could be better though. The main problem is with shading once again. You took out ALL of the shading on the Pokeball. You never want to mess with the shading....

Here's my sprites.

And I meant to put these in my last post, but I redid the Lucario and Hydreigon recolors for fun.

On the Metagross, you have an orangish outline surrounding its blue claws. Just informing you, cause that's a no-no. XP

All else is good. One more assignment then an exam:
Rhypherior as Rampardos
Hippowdon as Flaafy
Ulgamoth as Kyurem

The only problem I have with them is the Terrakion. When you pillowshade, it's just like an Inferno. You have the Darker outlines outside and the lighter ones inside. On Terrakion you sorta reversed it, so the darker ones are inside, and the lighter ones are outside.

All your other sprites are good. So, congrats, you pass Infernoes!

Would you like to take anything next?

LucarioMario March 14, 2011 05:29:38 PM

Oh, whoops. Guess I should've made my color palette reversed or something. xP

I would like to take Fusions next. :D

Alright. As always, first things first.
Read this tutorial.
Remember to have the fused parts blend in with the sprite. You don't want them to look as if you just stuck them on the sprite.

Your first assignment is:
Charmander and Mudkip - Charmander as base
Swinub and Oddish - Swinub as Base

yourfriend March 15, 2011 08:11:26 AM

Here they are.I didn't got much the icy thing.I just put blue colors. And what I had to edit to the other?I edited only outlines and a little the colors.
http://i51.tinypic.com/2mocnqf.png
ohh I made the outlines black.I saw that the munchlax in the tutorial has black outlines so I made them like that.

LucarioMario March 15, 2011 11:32:55 AM

Finished.

Is it OK to edit the shading a tiny bit to make something blend in? I did that with the Charmander's head.

The Tropius of Tropiuses March 15, 2011 01:08:46 PM

Allright, finished my sprites.
http://www.victoryroad.net/picture.p...pictureid=4191
Herdier as Whirlpede
Purplegasam! This was one of the harder ones, but mainly due to Herdier's muzzle mixing with his face.

http://www.victoryroad.net/picture.p...pictureid=4190
Dewott as Pignite
The easiest one for me. I was thinking of reclolring his hands, but then i thought they would mix with his, uh, "belt".

http://www.victoryroad.net/picture.p...pictureid=4189
Servine as Purrloin
It's in the middle in terms of difficulty. 'Nothing much I can say about it. :P
