Hunting for a Male Lampent in the Friend Safari, and this beauty pops up.

I would love to use it on a mono-Ghost team, but it is Naught natured and has No Guard. How usable is it?

Or Charmander with max IVs, ect.

But, I am open to other offers.

Very. Is the Eevee a male by chance?

I plan to breed it with my current (female)Umbreon knowing Curse.
So, I have a maxed Def, Sp Def and Att, Umbreon with Curse.

Reuniclus November 22, 2013 10:26:52 PM

I recently found a shiny Qwilfish while trying to do chain fishing again. It's Sassy and I'd be willing to put it up for trade.

If that's what you want, I may not be able to help you there. I don't know anything about getting specific IVs.

When would be a good time to trade?

Anyone have a Ditto from outside of the US that they would be willing to trade so I can use the Masuda method?

Just chain fish for one. For your sanity, just do it until you have one. Once you get one, you'll at least know the cartridge has shinies coded in, and it won't be as much of a strain finding the next one.

Also, Masuda definitely does work with a Ditto.

That is true. Never really been good at fishing, though. I always lose focus. That's also why I'm terrible at the PokéRadar...it's okay, anyways. I've been Masuda methoding for a Shiny Noibat, which has led to a number of Noibats with 31s in HP, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, and Speed, which I can always use as trade bait, so it's not a total waste.

Well my attempt to get another shiny Honedge through breeding isnt working yet, i went through at 12+ hours worth of eggs and nothen yet. But when i do get it, it should have at least Max Hp/Atk/Def/Sp.def.

Gunna sorta bump this.

Well after 3days i finally got my 2nd shiny honedge, it has Max HP/Def/Sp.def (No max Atk but its ok) I got this like 10mins before me and Reun's battle we had.

Reuniclus December 1, 2013 09:51:56 AM

Well, I just hatched a Shiny Solosis after 7 eggs with the Masuda Method. ^_^; It doesn't have the best IVs, but it has the right nature and ability. <3

RotomGuy December 1, 2013 10:01:36 AM

I just battled with a passerby. He had a Shiny Rotom. Curious, I ask him about it.

It's Modest. Has HP Ice. Best possible IV's for the HP.

Now I'm not sure if the last one is true, but the jealousy is strong in me right now.

Up to 617 eggs and nothing yet. I'm literally out of box space because the other 313 spaces are full of offspring from previous breeding endeavors. I'm going to take a break for a few hours and return to it when I feel more up to the task because this is getting tiresome.

Wait, do you keep every reject Pokemon you hatch? O_o I Masuda'd for a Shroomish back in Platinum, and when I finally got one my PC would have been full at least twice over. Surely one man can only need so many of a certain Pokemon.

The fact that they give you 31 Boxes this gen made me think I had enough. I'll probably check IVs later and throw out the bad ones and trade the good ones for other stuff.

kakashidragon December 2, 2013 12:00:49 AM

Well after about an hour after me and Ayun traded, i decided to find a female timid charmeleon in one of my friend safaris. Well about over 30 encounters i found a shiny Braxien :) what sucks though its Careful nature with max HP and Sp.atk.
But after that i decided im going to try and breed for a Timid shiny protein froakie. So i hope it dosnt take me another 3 days to a get shiny this way like with honedge using the Masuda Method. Wish me luck.....I wish you luck too Grass with that Noibat your trying to get. Lets see who gets our shiny first.

GrassPokemonFTW December 2, 2013 05:31:51 PM

After 744 eggs, I finally got a Shiny Noibat! But now comes my moral dilemma...its stats aren't great. Timid nature is fine, and Frisk is okay for an ability, but its stats are...well, they're sub-par. They would be great for a fast bulky supporter, but such is not the case.

It lands in with 31/20/31/6/31/31, and I much prefer to have 31 in Special Attack. I could have forgiven it if its Special Attack were higher, but 6 just isn't cutting it...what should I do? Should I go for another shiny and go through all this madness again or should I stick with my guns? =_=

The Villain of Scams December 2, 2013 07:30:38 PM

The only shiny I ever got was a Vulpix by Masuda Method breeding in Gen 5 for like 2 weeks. It was like... one hour everyday so it wasn't that bad. Totally worth it. :D

Thats up to you grass, when i got my 1st shiny honedge it had Max HP/Atk/Sp.def, but i decided to try again and got another one with Max HP/Def/Sp.def which to me it was worth it.

Reuniclus December 4, 2013 12:33:53 PM

I just hatched my 2nd shiny Solosis after around 150 eggs. This one is female, but it still doesn't have the right IVs. :c

Time for more breeding~!

kakashidragon December 5, 2013 12:47:16 AM

Till trying to my shiny froakie with protean, But its been about maybe a days worth now and still nothing :( It was easier to a shiny with my honedge.

Absol December 5, 2013 01:36:59 PM

I don't believe in IV/EV and breeding 50,000 times just for a nature and a 5 or 10% boost over another mon because I think that defeats the purpose of having fun.
That said, caught my first ever Shiny pokemon. Emolga, on route 10 below Geosenge. It was a couple weeks ago. Now it is a full-5 heart Amie flying death squirrel at lv.62. Will post its stats later.

Reun, I need to borrow your luck. Name your price.

I'm up to my neck in Noibat eggs (I think it's been about 300 since the first shiny...) and I don't know how much more I can take. But I will press on!

Grass its also driving me crazy getting my shiny froakie. This shiny is taking longer than the last i breed for. 2 days worth of eggs this time, and still nothing.

Reuniclus December 6, 2013 12:57:09 PM

About 120 eggs later, I hatched my 3rd shiny Solosis. I think I have too much luck with getting shinies of my own species.

GrassPokemonFTW December 6, 2013 02:17:58 PM

Welp, it's Friday, and I've accumulated over 4000 steps at school today so Hatching Power Level 3 will be at its maximum power and the power will regenerate at its fastest rate. Let's see if luck may be on my side tonight.

Magmaster12 December 6, 2013 05:12:01 PM

I've now started breeding plenty of Magby's.

Might as well try to get all the shiny pokemon in my signature now that I have a Shiny Snorlax.

kakashidragon December 7, 2013 08:36:42 PM

Seems like if i try to breed with the masuda method, it takes me about 3days to get a shiny with it. On to my point, I got my shiny froakie with at least Max Sp.atk and Speed....but it didnt have its protean ability which made me so mad ›:( But i read on smogon they found an easier way to get a shiny, but it requires you to find your TSV(Trainer Shiny Value) thing and find another player that has this ESV(Egg Shiny Value) then if you trade them your egg and they hatch it, it will be shiny. So im not giving up on that once i figure it out. But it does require you to trust the person too....so its risky sometimes unless you find the right people.

Sub-zero December 8, 2013 02:15:41 PM

kakashidragon December 12, 2013 06:22:14 PM

Latly im trying to obtain some shinys by breeding on my White 1. But most of my attempts isnt working right. So far i was able to get these: Adamant shiny Blaze Torchic (with agility) and Charmander (with Dragondance), Modest shiny Hidden Ability Eevee (with HP fire, going to evolve him to fairy-type Eevee on Y).
But im also trying to get a shiny Sassy eevee with these Ivs: 31/31/31/9/31/0

So far my attempts to breed a second Shiny Noibat has met with nothing but frustration, pain, and boxes upon boxes of 31/0-31/31/31/31/31 Noibats of the normal variety...so, uh, if anyone wants Noibats...you know where to find 'em...ugh...

RotomGuy December 13, 2013 10:24:50 AM

Damn, saved after the Oddish but didn't save after the Swadloon :(

It looked like a vampire and I want it back ;-;

Well, time to spend a few days in the Friend Safari.

Magmaster12 December 16, 2013 01:22:10 PM

I was going through Nin's Friend Safari to get an Ivysaur for my gym and I found this

It's sassy which I guess is pretty good.

Reuniclus December 20, 2013 08:33:31 PM

I was trying to breed a competitive Spiritomb and I hatched a shiny one after 30 eggs. It was a bit shocking to look down on my screen and see a blue one.

But oh well, it's blue da ba dee da ba dye~

[Just checked it, it has the right nature and ability c: ]

kakashidragon December 20, 2013 10:05:12 PM

Lol, run a Physical set! Just for lulz.

kakashidragon December 21, 2013 01:41:56 PM

The other ivs are terrible....the highest is 6. HP iv is 2, Atk iv is 3, def iv 5, and sp.def iv is 6.

Reuniclus January 24, 2014 06:40:02 PM

Here are a few I got while on vacation:

Found a shiny Vanillite from EV training in horde battles
Hatched a shiny Porygon through Masuda method.
Found a shiny Wingull while doing Y Nuzlocke

I ran into a shiny Gilgar! It was in a horde... Yeah, I probably shouldn't feel so accomplished since they made it easier to run into shinies... :(

kakashidragon February 1, 2014 05:06:25 PM

The other day when i breeding for a Jolly Focus punch shroomish, after about like 15-20 eggs i randomly got a shiny one. Cool thing about it though, its has the ivs i wanted for my normal shroomish so im happy. XP

BluFire1337 February 10, 2014 07:24:45 PM

Yes! It took me 51 eggs, but I finally got one! It's a shiny Ralts! It's also female, so I'm going with my plan to get a shiny mega Gardevoir to take down my friend's Tyranitar and Garchomp! Now to think up the rest of my team and put my plan to action! Mwahahahaha!!! >:D

It's also my first shiny to actually breed/hunt for successfully so I'm super excited! :D

Also, if you've seen this already, I accidentally posted this in the wrong thread, so I deleted it and moved it here, to the correct one. O.e

I was breeding over 6 boxes and finally got a shiny Pumpkaboo, well worth the time and effort to do so. (and not through the Msuedo method)

Magmaster12 February 21, 2014 03:35:27 PM

I was EV training and I came across a shiny geodude unfortunately it died thanks one of them using magnitude.

I then caught the murderer just so I could have it KO'd then released.

GreenMan March 4, 2014 12:54:31 AM

I was doing some breeding to help Cat with completing his pokedex and ended up putting an Italian ditto into the daycare and did some breeding. One of the pairs I did was his Emboarand that ditto. I got a shiny on the second one I hatched.

I had been trying to find a shiny in the Friend Safari after getting the Shiny Charm, only to realize that its rate was only increased slightly. I then went on to horde battles, as its shiny rate went up a lot (the normal increase times five Pokémon). Within six battles, I found this silly thing.

You might notice an immediate problem. Geodude knows Magnitude, which is sort of like Earthquake. In a horde battle, particularly one with where you want to catch a specific Pokémon, it comes down to pure luck for catching the one you want. Thankfully, there were only two uses of the move during the battle, one of which was by the Geodude pictured above. I thankfully did manage to catch it, as can be seen below. Sorry for the shaky pictures.

Find the shiny Nidoran♂. Hint: it's the one that's confused about its gender coloration.

Well while trying to ev train a pokemon I just got done with breeding up I run into this group, which messed up a little bit of my training as I now have to try to get speed EV reducing berries so that I can get the EVs I was going for:

Yes it's a shiney Floatzel, can't imagine who will be jealous

(Also it only took about 10-15 encounters while looking to find them)

First Shiny I came across after I got the shiny charm was also a geodude, however I wasn't as lucky as Cat and it ended up dying to a Magnitude.

I think I'm gonna try for a shiny gligar now.

For the past few days, I've been working on getting a usable shiny kin of a honey badger (that's Cyndaquil) through the Masuda Method. Today, I decided to shiny hunt in the Friend Safari at the same time just for the heck of it. What do I get? A shiny Magmar.

Timid, 18/31/27/15/31/19

Also, my camera broke moments before taking this picture, so it only works if I hold the lens at a certain spot. :P

*looks at the billion shinies Cat got*

Anyone else remember when shines were actually RARE and weren't a daily occurrence?

Cat333Pokémon March 11, 2014 11:21:27 AM

Speaking of the rarity of shiny Pokémon, I believe these are some relevant numbers as of X/Y. These numbers are rounded to the nearest integer because they are infinitesimally smaller. Some of them are estimates because they haven't yet actually been confirmed.

Wild: 1 in 4,096
Wild with Shiny Charm: 3 in 4,096
Wild horde: 5 in 4,096
Wild horde with Shiny Charm: 15 in 4,096
Masuda Method: 6 in 4,096
Masuda Method with Shiny Charm: 8 in 4,096
Friend Safari: 3 in 4,096
Friend Safari with Shiny Charm: 3 in 4,096
Chain fishing: increasing gradually from 1 in 4,096
Chain fishing with Shiny Charm: increasing gradually from 3 in 4,096 (assumed increased odds overall)
PokéRadar: increasing gradually from 1 in 4,096
PokéRadar with Shiny Charm: increasing gradually from 3 in 4,096 (assumed increased odds overall)

Yes, the Shiny Charm apparently does not affect the Friend Safari. Otherwise, the best way to find a shiny is through horde battles, but you're significantly limited to only a small set of Pokémon, and finding the one you want of those can be a pain. The Masuda Method (breeding two Pokémon foreign to each other by region) with the Shiny Charm seems to be the most reliable way to get a shiny with the Pokémon you want and stats/moves you want.

Not quite, if I remember what I did in Statistics class last week, but the difference is so small that n/4096 is close enough :^)

I was never interested in Shinies even before this, but does anyone else feel like they're worth next to nothing now?

I already accounted for that: ;)

This is a problem that utilizes the binomial distribution probability mass function, which looks like this:
f(k; n, p) = (nCk)(p)k(1 − p)nk
where k is the number of desired results, n is the number of trials, and p is the probability of getting a desired result, where every trial is independent of every other trial.

For n independent iterations (we'll reserve "trials" to refer to encounters), the probability of getting exactly one shiny is:
f(1; n, 1/4096) = (nC1)(1/4096)(4095/4096)n − 1
Exactly two shinies:
f(2; n, 1/4096) = (nC2)(1/4096)2(4095/4096)n − 2
And so on for k shinies:
f(k; n, 1/4096) = (nCk)(1/4096)k(4095/4096)nk
So let's reduce it for at least one shiny, by simply subtracting the case of no shinies from 1:
f(k > 0; n, 1/4096) = 1 − (4095/4096)n
For n = 15 (the number of iterations that the shininess is checked in a horde encounter), this equates to 0.0036558575 (while 15/4096 equates to 0.0036621094). They're incredibly close, but not identical. This leaves our final equation at:
f(k > 0; n, 1/4096) = 1 − (4095/4096)nn/4096, for small n

Overall, the worst problem with shiny hunting is the Gambler's Fallacy, which is where people think an outcome (in this case, a shiny) is "due" because of previous trials, especially when they don't match the odds exactly. It doesn't matter if you've hatched 5 eggs or 500 eggs, the odds are still the same that the next egg will be shiny. This is directly related to loss aversion of sunk costs, where those who have sunken a large amount of money believe they need to win it all back (in this case, time invested and the resulting shiny) by spending more time on the process, when the money (time) has already been spent getting nothing. Bet most folks don't think that shiny Pokémon involve statistics/probability, economy, psychology, philosophy/logic, and common sense. 8-)

I've built a little program that simulates the number of eggs or encounters you'd need to locate a shiny Pokémon. It requires .NET 4.0, but that's already on most Windows systems. I've also included the Visual Basic .NET 2010 source code for those curious to see how it works.

I feel like such a nerd. :ugeek:

Thanks, now I know I did my math right [:
Should totally print that out and bring it to Stats tomorrow so I can tell people that class isn't useless.

I remember writing a Java program that did something like that a few years ago. No idea what happened to it, though.

Edit: oh yeah, people used to tell me that you were guaranteed a Shiny within 1/shiny rate Pokémon. Used to drive me crazy (now I just laugh and say "good luck").

Magmaster12 March 27, 2014 01:54:08 PM

I got a shiny cubone today while looking for a rhyhorn in glittering cave. Good thing I didn't run into one since I already have a shiny rhyperior.

Found myself a shiny Excadrill while looking for a Jolly nature Mold Breaker one in a safari i have. Too bad it has a Calm nature, it has some awsome stats.

MattyBrollic March 31, 2014 07:58:05 PM

You have an excadrill safari? You are so lucky.

It also has ferroseed and metang in it. I also got other cool safaris on the list of them. (Got like over 50 safaris, due to me having alot of friends on my 3ds FC list)

Reuniclus April 3, 2014 05:01:10 PM

I found 2 shiny Claunchers within 7 encounters of each other. I was able to Synchronize Modest onto both of them. Chain fishing is almost broken.

Reuniclus April 4, 2014 09:29:51 PM

I hatched a shiny Clauncher after a whopping 3 eggs through Masuda Method.

I got a shiny Calm Unburdun Treeko in about a day and a half of eggs worth. Im working on getting a shiny timid Magician fennekin next.

Reuniclus April 15, 2014 09:04:07 PM

I got a shiny Froakie after 90 eggs and then I got a shiny Charmander after 8 eggs. My luck can be quite strange.

Magmaster12 May 4, 2014 07:22:26 PM

I got my first shiny through chain fishing today.

Unfortunately it was a Relicanth.
