[Poké-Nicknames]

Do you nickname your Pokémon? Do you not nickname them on purpose?

Let's hear those nicknames! C'mon, I'm interested. :3

It doesn't have to be your main party, just favorite Pokénames you've given various Pokémon throughout your Training career.

Fubab_107 July 20, 2010 01:10:59 AM

Chikorita Line - Usually Chika,Bay, or Megain.

And If I can not find a name that won't sound awkward, I'll just find the German or French version of the name. I don't know why. Although would this option really count?

Sure. o_o; Those are still named not associated with their "birth" names. Think of Pokemon Stadium II, or Colosseum. Some of the nicknames were just the first and second halves of the names reversed. So we'd see like, TwoMew, or TrodeElec. >.>;

SK July 20, 2010 05:55:45 AM

Uh, I don't usually name them but one time when I was like 10 I named my Gulpin.. Poopyfatty. :P That was a good laugh because my friend and I were playing Ruby and Sapphire at 3 AM.

Then he caught a Guilpin for himself and we traded our Poopyfatties! o3o

Idno58 July 20, 2010 05:59:20 AM

I used to have a file on my Emerald where I named my character Mario and I caught pokemon that reminded me of Mario characters and named them after them. (Kekleon=Yoshi, Torkoal=Bowser, etc.)

mariothecellist July 20, 2010 06:21:55 AM

I named my Pokemon in RBY up to RSE. I forget early ones, but I can remember I named my Kyogre-BigMan, Blaziken-FlamMan (like MegaMan characters) and Rayquaza-Ray. I can't remember anything else. After RSE, I just didn't name them.

piexing July 20, 2010 11:00:43 AM

I name all my Shuckle with puns. Shuck You! is my favorite. :3

TomE22 July 20, 2010 11:12:30 AM

I only nickname my Pokemon in Mystery Dungeon and I usually give them dumb names about their type or on what they represent. For example: Suddowoodo-Mimetree, Aaron-Hardhead, Breloom-FungusFist, Fearow-Angrybeak

Aries July 20, 2010 01:23:57 PM

When I was little, I named my Charmander, Heat-Wave. Since it's the Pokemon I feel the most nostalgic for, I always give Charmander that name to this day.

As for my dream team:
Espeon: Angelica (because Espeon is angelic X3)
Weavile: Grace (because Weavile is a graceful moving Pokemon who's a pleasure to watch)

aaaaaaannd others I don't feel like saying... :/

SteamPunk July 20, 2010 02:43:10 PM

Sneasel/Weavile - SNUSNU

(snusnu means sex in some wierd alien language from Futurama)

.name//Technomancer July 20, 2010 08:04:44 PM

My nicknames often come from RPG references, like:

-Isuitgon [Aggron], who was named after a gravity-defying, or gravity-amplifying metal from an RPG forum I used to frequent [and get banned from often].

-Kaanta [Gardevoir] comes from a mix of Old World languages, and part Elvish [Tolkien], and Al Bhed. It means "Beautiful Mind" or "Beauty, Wisdom", depending on if you're looking at it from an Egyptian or Norse perspective.

-Terrorgator [Feraligatr] is simple enough. Replace Feral with Terror. xD I think it sounds cooler.

-Betty [Blaziken] was also simple. My wife has seen... Selective fanart of Blaziken, and thought she was hot. xD Name'd.

-Pestilence [Toxicroak] was named for the third rider of the Apocalypse. She was also partially named for my trap door spider, who shares the name. n.n

-Hivemind [Vespiquen] was named for an RP character of mine, a squishy Tyrant who can basically control Zombies with her mind... It's complicated to understand. It fits too, considering Vespiquen does control masses of Combee... >.>;

-Ma'at [Desukaan] will be named after the Egyptian Goddess of Justice, and Afterlife Judgment. Again, it fits, consider she's [probably] dead, being a Ghost type... >.>

-Lilith [Lucario] was named for the Pagan Goddess of Female Strength and Independence. Being the strongest girl [Physically] that is in my crew, the name fits.

I typically nickname all of my crew members, because quite honestly, I think it's cooler. xD;;;

JC July 20, 2010 08:08:49 PM

in RSE, once named them with numbers, like 001, 002, 003, etc. almost worked but I forgot to save it.

The Spirit of Time July 21, 2010 09:08:01 AM

I nickname some selected Pokémon. Some nicknames are basic, while others refer to their originality.

Bronzong: Bell
Salamence: Boomanga
Togekiss: Jubilee
Gengar: Phantom
Gallade: Blade
Hippowdon: Hippo
Skarmory: Armor
Blissey: Hapinasu
Empoleon: Emperor

Houndoom- Maddie(My dog's name)
Feraligater- Jaw Breaker
Blaziken- Fire Fu

SergeiDragunov July 22, 2010 04:13:34 PM

I name my Pokemon pretty cool things. For example:

Onix- Koloss
Kangaskhan- Dominator
Arbok (f)- Scylla
Typhlosion- Hellblaze

Also see my adopts. Those are all names I use for the respective species.

I also nickname my nicknames at times. For example, Andromeda is my Jynx, but I refer to her as Annie for short oftentimes.

Turtwig July 22, 2010 04:17:26 PM

Totodile- crocodile
Turtwig- twig
Pikachu- sparky
Gengar- shadow
Other Pokemon-Normal names

GreenLiquid July 22, 2010 06:33:55 PM

Prior to Generation III, I didn't nickname my Pokémon at all, aside from my 'main,' which was a Pigeot named either "Birdy" or "Birdy2."

In Gen III, I started giving my Pokémon names that were either references to various things or that otherwise seemed fitting. The only one that I explicitly remember is a Sableye named "Banquo." :p Legendaries, though, I don't nickname on principle.

Ditto616 July 22, 2010 07:10:49 PM

In my Platinum, I ended up nicknaming three teams, and I was going to nickname my Gym team, but I never got around to it.

In-game team:
Empoleon-Skipper: Named after the leader of the penguins from the Madagascar penguins.
Roserade-Rose: Do the math on this one yourself -_-
Staraptor-Tony: Tony Hawk... Yeah... I couldn't think of a good one. Kyll gave that one to me...
Lucario-Ryu: Named after the Street Fighter character because the Aura Sphere attack resembles a Hadouken, a signature move of Ryu.
Jolteon-Sparkey: Again, quite obvious.
Houndoom-Cerberus: After the guardian of Hades, the name doesn't suit a better Pokémon, in my own opinion.

Now, my first competitive team also had nicknames. One of my original on the team had to be scrapped after it was made because it broke the evasion clause, as it was first going to be used for VGC.
Lucario-Anubis: After the Egyptian God of the dead. It is believed that is what Lucario is modeled after.
Lapras-Nessie: After the Loch Ness Monster. If you don't know, Google it. I'm really into cryptozoology, so I thought why not give it that name.
Venusaur-Raffles: Named after the flower Raffelsia. I do believe that's the one that smells of rancid meat. It resembles the flower on Venusaur's back.
Blaziken-Sol: The Spanish word for sun, and I believe I've heard that name for a deity before. Either way, I think it suits her.
Spiritomb-Eris: After the Greek Goddess of Chaos. It suits the set, because it's meant to live, evade, and toxify.
Gliscor-Sting: It's a scorpion. Scorpions sting.
Gengar-Loki: Norse Trickster God. It fits the personality generally described to Gengar.

The last team I named was the Little Cup team I made.
Wingull-Peeko: If you guys don't know this one, I'm ashamed. Go play Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald version right now.
Nosepass-Moai: Named after the statues found on Easter Island, which is what Nosepass resembles.
Abra-ShaZAM!: Three reasons for this one. It evolves into Alakazam, Shazam is a "magic word", and Shazam was a song I was playing in Jazz Band at the time.
Riolu-Ken: Named after the Ken from Street Fighter, since this Riolu knew Sky Uppercut, which you could say is similar to a Shoryuken.
Growlithe-Jackal: JACKAL? IT'S A JACKAL! JACKAL! I think that's all I have to say.
Gligar-Mecoptera: The name of a species that may have been an inspiration for the Gligar family.

Wow, that's a lot longer than I thought it would be...

LiteTheIronMan July 22, 2010 07:18:25 PM

I typically name a good amount of my teams after songs.

Team 1: Hoenn Team
Blaziken- Gloryblaze: I'M GOIN' DOWWWWWWWWWNNNNNN IN A BLAAAAAZE OF GLORRRRYYYY
Metagross- Warmachine: Named after both the song "War Machine" by AC/DC and the comic book character War Machine.
Sceptile- Grassdraco: Uhm. It's a grass type, and it looks kinda like a dragon. So.
Swampart- Mudslide: I had no idea what I was thinking when I named it this. I blame it on lack of wanting to name it "SoIHerdULiek" like so many people do.
Manectric- Hi-Voltage: Based on the AC/DC song/album High Voltage.
Swellow- Sure Shot: From the Beastie Boys song "Sure Shot" from the Ill Communication album.

Team 2: Full Time Team

Gloryblaze
Warmachine
Torterra- Earthmover: I was really bored...
Feraligatr- Rapid Rage: Uhm... yeah... no.
Raichu- T.N.T.: CUZ I'M TNT~ I'M DAI-NO-MITE! TNT~ AND I'LL WIN THE FIGHT! TNT~ I'M A POWER LOAD! TNT~ WATCH ME EXPLOOOOODE
Pidgeot- Eagle Eye: Oh come on! Eagle Eye was a GREAT movie!

NismoZ July 25, 2010 10:47:58 AM

Hmm. Interesting, Why'd you nickname him that?

Really? It was okay, I guess, I wouldn't call it great.

THAT'S a good trade. What'd you have to give up?

Leaftail August 7, 2010 12:34:14 PM

I mostly only name the legendaries. I once named my legendary trio in Emerald after the mythological beings they were based on (Rayquaza - Ziz, Kyogre - Leviathan, Groudon - Behemoth). My Articuno and Zapdos in Red were named Frosty and Sparky. I also named my team on shoddy battle after Greek Gods.

Erm... o3o

Rayquaza was based off of the Mesoamerica wind serpent, Quetzalcoatl... >.> Groudon was based [loosely, not entirely] on the Troll Giant Grendel, whom Beowulf was claimed to have slain in the sky where he was at his weakest, and Kyogre was [again, loosely] based off of an Eastern water ogre, whose name I draw a blank at the moment.

Jus' sayin'. o_o

Leaftail August 7, 2010 06:00:18 PM

Well that's not what it said on Bulbapedia...

Ningamer August 7, 2010 06:06:20 PM

I never really nickname my Pokemon. In my recent run of Emerald I've nickamed a few Pokemon after VR members (My Mudkip is Blues, my Wrumple is Jared, etc.). On Pokemon Sapphire I called myself sameJ and I nicknamed all my Pokemon as their names backwards. I have a Swampert called kipduM, for example. :P

Well, that's definitely changed in the past 8 months.

Starting with Black, I've been giving all my Pokemon real names (with the exceptions of Grinder the Klinklang, which I can't really give a human name since it's a genderless hunk of metal).

The Pokemon I have nicknamed so far:
Jack (Samurott)
Kevin (Conkeldurr)
Mandy (Gigalith)
Dawn (Cofagrigus)
Rook, Knight, and Shanky (Pawniard)
Sparky (Galvantula)
Bueller (Ferrothorn)
Pierson (Hydreigon)
Anthony (Volcarona)
Grinder (Klinklang)
Coraline (Chandelure)

Sableyed April 15, 2011 10:45:31 PM

teamplasma April 16, 2011 08:57:40 AM

Phanfy is usually Tuboflard

LiteTheIronMan April 16, 2011 09:57:57 AM

I'm going to use a completely competitive Gen V team, and I'm going to nickname them as such:

Emboar: Gurren
Samurott: Enkidu
Serperior: Excaliber
Hydreigon: Ridley
Excadrill: Lagann
Reuniclus: Metroid

I'm also going to make another Metagross (Warmachine) and a Golurk (Grapearl).

Armads April 17, 2011 08:55:27 AM

A couple of pokemon I'm planning to put on a Gen V competitive team (planned for double battles on the Subway so there are only four of them):
Haxorus♀ - "Liyr" after a villain in my current Dungeons & Dragons campaign (lol).
Galvantula - Not acquired yet, so its nickname will depend on what gender I get. Going with "Anansi" if it's male, and "Princess" if it's female.
Alomomola♀ - "Momo." Nothing too special here lol
Cryogonal - "Betelgeuse," after the central star in the Winter Hexagon.

Alakazamaster April 19, 2011 09:08:48 PM

The fact of the matter is that all Pokemon need nicknames if you use them for battling other people. That is half of the fun of battling! Here are some of mine...

Jellicent: Jellybob (named after the Doctor Mario 64 character)

Tyranitar: Rocksteady (the rhino from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon from the 80's)

Crobat: Hairy Bug (according to Calvin and Hobbes, bats are bugs because they are hairy and fly)

Mismagius: GoldenGirl (shiny Mismagius is gold, and 3/4 of the Golden Girls are dead...)

Jynx: Lola (you simply must respect the fact that no one had a Jynx named "Jynx" back in Gen 1)

Just a few examples.

Pflanze April 20, 2011 02:27:12 AM

I have always nicknamed my pokémons, since blue. Some of them are:

Ninetails - Soleil

Steelix - Metallo

Mewtwo - Giegue

Bidoof - IHATEU

Dragonite September 29, 2014 06:04:40 PM

It's still okay to reply to this thread even though it's been dead for 3 years, right? i'll made a new one instead if that would be preferable.

I have more than this, but I made myself whittle down my favorite 25.

Current favorite
Hydreigon named Dovahkiin. I considered "Adulin," who's actually a dragon in Skyrim, but I like to pronounce "dovahkiin" out loud more so that won. and Hydreigon is probably the only dragon who actually looks evil.

Named for YouTubers
Donphan named "Epic No" (chuggaaconroy)
Ludicolo named "Chuggaa"
Skarmory named "Eyan" (superskarmory)
Male Gardevoir named "Masae"
I probably have a Dragonite named Pimp(nite) somewhere but I have like twenty Dragonite spread across about five games and finding it'll take forever.
I haven't caught/bred a Zoroark in over a year but if/when I do I'll probably name it something related to VR.

Bad puns and stuff/totally unoriginal
Garchomp named "Garchew"
Roserade named "Hawthorne"
Abomasnow named "Obamasnow"
Espeon named "SBN" (say it out loud if you don't get it)
Used to have a Pikachu named "Pikachomp" but I think I deleted that game. One cousin has a Gyarados named "Gyaradon't."
Cobalion named "KnockItOff" (Justified ability)

Just weird
Cofagrigus named "Cof*grigus" (who remembers the glitchy BW censor?)
Mewtwo named "Giovanni"
Registeel named "(heart)FireBlast" (those beautiful 400+ SpDf points)
Ferrothorn named "Hug Me"
Klinklang named "GLaDOS"
Arceus named "3.14Day!!" (obtained it on Pi Day)
Arceus named "ImNotHackd" (the pokémon is quite obviously hacked)
Offensive Blissey named "JoyIsAngry"
Female Mienshao named "Mr. Miyagi"
Another Mienshao named "Wax Off" (I quite liked that movie)
Altaria named "PillowHead"
Heracross named "Schnozz" (Italian slang for "big nose")(I know it's not actually a nose, it's a horn)
Smeargle named "Taco"
Different Smeargle named "Burrito"

Not strictly Pokémon but why not
In one of the Zelda Oracles games you get to name somebody's kid. I decided it was a good idea to name them after Magikarp (shortened to "Karp").

Magmaster12 September 29, 2014 07:00:07 PM

I had to dig around the forum for this.

From my second BW2 run

Lapras ~ Ninten
Briavery ~ Romney
Roserade ~ Rosie
Krokorock ~ Duster
Ampharos ~ Jacklyn
Emboar ~ Piglett
