The Living Pokédex
I know a few folks around here have considered the idea of the Living Pokédex. That's where you have to simultaneously own every single Pokémon, including all evolutions, with bonus points for all forms.
There are 649 Pokémon. Including all Pokémon forms (but not gender differences), there are 731 different Pokémon. Now, it's obvious that this will get fun with certain Pokémon. Simultaneously owning all 17 Arceus or all 5 Genesect shouldn't really count, as they are just color changes, so that reduces it to 711 different Pokémon. Spinda's "forms" don't count, either. :p The PC can store 720 Pokémon, and you can have 6 more in your party. I do need to know a few checks, though, as it's been a while. You CAN put the alternate forms of Castform, Cherrim, Rotom, Shaymin, Giratina, Deerling, and Sawsbuck in the PC in White 2, right? (Oh great, I'll need six Rotom.) I'm definitely going to take a shot at making one of these, at least with the base 649, in White 2 after clearing the Pokémon League. Is anyone else attempting one? |
I recently started doing this. Unfortunately... I had to quit. And I was doing so well, too, I made it all the way up to the middle of Hoenn. But then I realized I needed a whole lot more box space for breeding and keeping all the Pokémon I like so... Well maybe if I somehow latch on to a copy of White 2 it'll be my living Pokedex. After all, trading isn't TOO much of a chore.
Spinda "forms" OBVIOUSLY don't count with its infinitely many whatevers... |

Hard mode: All the Pokemon need to be shiny.
|
Now that's not gonna happen anytime soon. :p
I still wish for more storage. Also, this thread will probably remain dormant until I complete White 2 (progress will be posted in the usual place), but I'd love to hear some comments or ideas anyone has. |
Woah, sounds extremley hard. I could never do something like this... but if you do try and go for it, Good Luck!
|
To my knowledge, Castform and Cherrim only have one state outside of battle, since their forme changes are brought on by the effects of weather. If I'm correct, that means 4 less formes (3 Castform, 1 Cherrim) to put in the PC.
|
Shaymin also can't be placed in the PC in Sky Forme. It turns back to Land Forme when frozen, at night, or placed in the PC (Probably BECAUSE of the night restriction.)
|
Well, at least that saves me a few spots. :p
|
Oh, I forgot to mention one thing. I nearly have a Living Ranch. I remember playing a game years back where folks got little prizes for guessing Pokémon that I didn't have in My Pokémon Ranch. After about 50 rounds, only four Pokémon weren't in there. I did later add them, too. I'm probably mostly missing higher up evolutions of Gen V Pokémon and a couple middle evolutions from previous generations. Apart from Meloetta and Landorus, I think I have every single legendary Pokémon.
This is gonna be easy. :D |
Well, X and Y certainly change things, and it looks like Gen V didn't get any link-up love from the consoles. So, uhh, what do you folks suggest? I'm only in Castelia City (check out Zoroark's posts in the recent happenings thread for updates) and have a mere couple Pokémon captured.
|
Well you should totally keep going on. You have just barely enough space in White 2 to hold all the Pokémon for a Living Pokedex. And, if you'd like, you could use it to aid in a 6th Gen Living Pokedex, assuming there's a transfer method (Which there should be.)
|
Hmm, very true. I was thinking last night about just doing a Living Unovadex and completing my Living Ranchdex. At that point, though, I might as well send 'em all over.
|
Hmm... I probably wouldn't even dare to try this. It's like... well, box management and the problem of collecting them in the first place... Egad. Not to mention how sloppy I handle things sometimes.
|
I'm still questioning if I should do this. You might also notice I haven't been updating the other thread with my White 2 progress. Well, school starts tomorrow, and I have a six hour break on Tuesday and Thursday. Other than homework, White 2 will make a nice filler.
|
Hmm, with the new Pokémon Bank, I might have the desire to actually do this again without too much painful transferring between games.
|
I'm definitely going to start working on one once the Bank comes out. I've nearly got one in My Pokémon Ranch, and I have most of the Gen V and Gen VI Pokémon, so it shouldn't be much trouble to finish one.
Anyone else have one or plan to make one? |
I'm gonna trade up my finished Pokedex from Black 2 and work on it from there. I don't know if I should keep the Live-Dex in Pokébank or the actual game. Which do you choose?
|
I'm definitely picking it up again soon, but it'll be more difficult for me to get certain rarities. I've completed (or nearly completed) most of the Pokedexes in all generations except the third. I have some real issues with them... Oh, and they are definitely being stored in Bank. I've decided there's no way I want to risk losing such precious Pokemon.
|
I'd definitely leave mine in the bank because there's no point in wasting about 750~800 slots (hey, gotta have all the forms) in the actual games where you may be actively breeding and Wonder Trading.
Oh, with the obvious exception of temporarily transferring Pokémon into X to complete the Pokédex and get the Shiny Charm. :P |
Before I seriously start organizing my Pokémon, I need a sorting suggestion. For Pokémon with multiple forms, should I put them in line with the representative of the species. What I mean is, should I put Misdreavus in slot 200, Unown A in slot 201, and Wobbuffet in slot 202, with the rest of the Unown in the back, or should I put all 28 Unown between Misdreavus and Wobbuffet?
|
Er, I really would like to get a suggestion soon. I'm almost finished collecting all the Pokémon.
|
I would do it the former way.
I do it like that, and the normal Pokedex order looks so much better than with forms clumped in. |
This is actually my long term goal for the games to have a living pokedex and then transfer them all over each generation and catch all of the new ones each generation. I'm more of a PokéDex completing kind of guy than a competitive battler, but I enjoy both. Eventually, I'd like to get every Pokémon in every form with shinies (as long as they're available without a certain group of game modifying devices in which I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to say on these forums). My only problem would be getting that shiny Genesect from that event that we never got here in the states. Over course, these are all long term goals, but I'd love to have it done eventually.

I decided I should force myself to finish this thing before Sun and Moon, because I don't want to collect the first six generations again just for the Pokédex. It's pointless holding onto so many freshly caught monsters I won't do a thing with for solely that reason. I also added a couple stipulations: try to use ones from respective games if possible, NO NICKNAMES, no "special" Pokémon (those I used on the adventure or raised competitively), no hacks, and avoid times I cheated to get a bunch of Master Balls.
Progress: up to Sinnoh, except 20. First two generations are fully complete. I was missing some really random stuff, too, including: Ekans, Charizard, Bayleef, Delcatty, Snover, Stunky, Pansear, and BUNNELBY. |
Updated progress! I only need four more, then I will be done:
Vivillon Poké Ball Vivillon Sandstorm Vivillon Savanna Volcanion Looks like the new Alola forms have confirmed that I will need to move a lot of Pokémon forward to make space for them. It shouldn't be too tedious, though. |
Alright, besides two event Pokémon (Poké Ball Vivillon and Volcanion), I am finally done with it! (If you want to count the Eternal Flower Floette, I guess that too, but that's also an unreleased event.)
It occupies 28 boxes. |
So they're all in order, too? You going to transfer them to SM as soon as possible to get the reward right off the bat? o_o
|
That's the plan, though you'd still need to get all the Alolan Pokémon from both versions, which would also take a while. But having a living Pokédex gives you a great head start.

As for the Alola forms, they'll definitely be added too, which will necessitate moving stuff forward. It shouldn't be as tedious as it sounds, but I hope it's a multiple of six, preferably exactly 30. ;) |
After considering a bit, I've decided to go after all of the Pokémon with gender differences. I've got about another 40 to go. A few interesting ones are missing, including male Zubat, female Dustox, and male Gible.
|
So with Cat finishing his Living 'Dex and the quickly approaching arrival of Sun/Moon, I got inspired to finally finish mine.
I actually wanted to do this years ago. I caught a few Pokemon here and there, but never really sat down and figured out what I need. Cat finished his and said he had a bunch of leftover Pokemon I could have, so figured alright I'll finally work on mine. Just to have one of each 720 Pokemon, I needed over 330 of them.... Now a month later I'm done! Here's what I have: Included are the following:
As for my "rules":
Thanks a bunch to Cat for helping me get a bunch of these buggers. EDIT: Got Sandstorm Vivillon, now I'm completely done |
Bringing this back up as Sun and Moon have been released.
So, I completed the story and started compiling the list of what I would need to add to my Living Dex. As the game is pretty new, there are still a few holes of information missing online (what forms can be stored in PC? Are there any with gender differences?), but there's still plenty to work with. With the information I have now, there are 107 Pokemon to add (so when done that's over 1000 unique Pokemon!) and I currently have 36 of them. |
I compiled this list a couple days ago, as there was scant information online that didn't have images. I might've misspelled one or two of them. Be forewarned, there are spoilers.

Officially going for this before the Pokémon Bank updates to allow transfer to Sun/Moon.
So far I have 633/721 in my AlphaSapphire Pokédex, though it's all unordered so far. Thanks to the year-long Mystery Gift spam I've got all of the event legendaries already, most of what I'm missing are the unevolved forms of the competitive Pokémon I transferred from Black/White/2 during the last generation shift (Budew, Combusken, the list goes on) plus Malamar which might be hard to get since my 3DS apparently does not respond well to being upside-down. Putting everything in order may honestly be the hardest part, since I currently have thirty or so half-full boxes of comeptitive, breeding fodder, past in-game teams, etc., etc., etc. and creating a living Pokédex out of it will probably be a two or three day ordeal. |

I later had to go back to all my Gen IV and V games to locate stuff I needed. Being able to just catch a Tyranitar in the wild in White was a time-saver. |
Apart from Lunala, Zygarde, and the to-be-released Marshadow, my Gen 7 extension is complete. :D
|
Oh yes, aside from Zygarde 100% (missing about 20 cells) and the un-released Marshadow, I completed all 7th gen stuff as well.
The extra Ultra-Beasts you are given make great trade fodder to get version-exclusive/rare Pokemon if you only have one version of the game. |
WOW thats so cool :D id want to make one of those but i wouldnt ever finnish it
|
So, Bank is out now, so all I have to do is actually migrate my Gen VII Pokémon into it and shuffle everything around so the 91 other females can go alongside their male counterparts, as well as the Alola forms.

. . . maybe by Gen 8? |
You didn't buy Bank yet, you haven't transferred your Pokémon from your Gen V games, or you didn't make a Living Pokédex?
|
Living Pokédex and transferring stuff from my Gen 6 game(s). In fact, I think the last time I did any work at all on it was the last time I posted in this thread. x(
|
*moves all Pokemon I have from Sun into Bank*
Nice, now I just have to stop being lazy and collect the rest of the Zygarde cells for the 100% form and I'm done. *spends 2 hours hunting down the last cells* *combines and gets a 50% form* Uh what? *researches and finds Zygarde 100% form only comes after getting less than 50% HP in battle, AKA can't be stored* Oh for Arceus sake... Well aside from the un-released Marshadow, I'm done. All 801 individual Pokemon All gender variants All alternate forms that can be stored within PC All coming to 1017 monsters total. |
Huh, then that means the only Pokémon I need is Lunala. I put up one of the Ultra Beasts a few weeks ago on the GTS, asking for one. I should see if I got one. :P
Nevertheless, congrats! It is certainly an endeavor. |
Woo, done with mine too: all 801 released Pokémon, including all released formes and gender differences.
