Default LiteTheIronMan's Month of Metroid

It's August, and that means that in 30 days Metroid: Other M will hit North American shores. Now, seeing as how I'm one of six people here who actually cares about this series, I figured I'd do a segment for the entireity of August where I post Metroid facts, trivia, and other information here daily until August 31st, when Metroid: Other M comes out.

August 1st, 2010

Fact #1: The Metroid series is moderately influenced by Ridley Scott's film franchise Alien. The main character of both franchises is female (Ellen Ripley/Samus Aran), the main antagonistic alien's main form of attack is latching onto the victim's head (Metroid/Facehugger alien), and one of the villians in Metroid is even directly named after Ridley Scott.

I compared these two things sometimes, but never knew it really was influenced, awesome!

Fact #2: The Morph Ball technology that Samus employs in the Metroid games has remained a mystery since its conception. Many believe that Samus is simply a contortionist, however this is not the case; in scan data from Metroid Prime, it is revealed that Space Pirates testing a reverse engineered Morph Ball prototype suffered from broken and mangled spines.

Yeah... Morph Balls do look painful... But also really fun!

Fact #1 does not explain Justin Bailey.
Fact #2 makes me think Samus has shrinking capabilities, similar to a hamster ball. The large ball size would be for protection.
Also, fact #3: It is spelled Metroid, people. O before I or you will get died.

Fact #3: In the Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt demo bundled with the original Nintendo DS, a teaser trailer for the full game can be unlocked. However, none of the characters (nor the music which plays or the area Samus appears in) actually made it into the final product.

I've still got mine.

Though I don't have my original DS any more. And I lost the demo. I sorta liked it... Though I didn't really like the control scheme.

Fact #4: In the 2-D Metroid games where Samus recieves the Grapple Beam (and in Super Smash Bros.), the Grapple Beam fires out of her Arm Cannon. However, in the Prime series, Samus fires the Grapple Beam from a gun-like object attached to her left wrist, and furthermore in Prime 3: Corruption, it fires directly from the back of her left hand.

Fact #6: Continuing my spree of Metroid Prime Hunter facts, it's also the game where Samus is the least equipped out of all the Metroid games, only carrying 7 Energy Tanks, 95 Missiles, 6 weapons and 400 bullets of Universal Ammo. She never recieves any other upgrades.

If memory serves First Hunt did...

On the point of Fact #3 the characters bear some resemblance to the hunters...

Fact #8: Yoshio Sakamoto, the developer of the Metroid series, also created Kid Icarus. Metroids even make a small cameo in the game, yet the name of the creatures are changed.

Fact #9: Samus can slap bumper stickers for several Nintendo games (including Wii Sports, Super Mario Galaxy, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess) onto her Hunter-Class Gunship in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, granted you have save data for the games on your Wii and purchased the Bumper Sticker unlockable aesthetic.

Fact #11: Probably the two most infamous passcodes in the history of video gaming, Justin Bailey and Narpas Sword grant Samus different abilities. JUSTIN BAILEY ------ ------ spawns Samus in Norfair in her Zero Suit with 30 HP out of six Energy Tanks remaining, the Long Wave Beam, the Screw Attack, the Maru Mari and bombs, and 255 missiles (although the number drops to 205 due to a glitch). NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000 spawns Samus at the beginning of the game with the Long Ice Beam, the Maru Mari and bombs, the Screw Attack, and no missile counter (but an infinite amount of them at start). However, Samus never takes damage when Narpas Sword is in effect, and when you obtain Missiles she fires the same 5 missiles in infinite amounts.

(for lulz, I used Narpas Sword to fight with Kraid in the original Metroid.)

Fact #12: Metroid: Zero Mission mainly serves the purpose of rearranging Zebes' geography so it doesn't clash with the layout in Super Metroid. However, the placements of Maridia, Crateria and Tourian still clash with the original geography of Metroid and Super Metroid, and there's even two new areas in the game (Chozodia and the Space Pirate Mothership) that are plotted somewhat incorrectly according to Super's geography.

Fact #13: The typical Metroid life cycle sees the Metroid through its signature Alpha floating stage, then eventually becoming a bipedal dinosaur looking creature. However, on other planets Metroids can develop differently according to environmental exposure.

Fact #16: If Weavel's appearance in Metroid Prime: Hunters is considered, then the Space Pirates and the Metroids are tied for most recurring character. If Hunters: First Hunt is not considered a game, then the Space Pirates are the most recurring character.

Fact #19: Metroid II set the current standard for Samus's appearance in the Metroid games. Her bulky shoulder pads were designed for use in Metroid II due to the lack of a color palette, and the opening in her Arm Cannon for the missile hatch was devised for the same reason. (In the NES Metroid Samus's suit would turn an orange color when equipped with the Varia Suit, and a pink color when Missiles were enabled.)

Fact #21: Samus was slated to be in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, but was cut due to liscensing issues. Screenshots of her ingame reveal her using the beams from Prime, with her design being based on her appearance in that game.

Fact #31: Metroid: Other M was released today.

Metroid: Other M (And other items) Unboxing Video

Metroid: Other M is FINALLY here, and that means I can show you guys A. an unboxing video and B. a poorly recorded gameplay video! Yay!

So in this visit to GameStop I got:

1. Metroid: Other M
2. Metroid: Other M Art Folio (given when M:OM was preordered at GameStop)
3. Metroid: Other M Prima Games Premiere Edition Strategy Guide
4. Pokemon Black preorder
5. Pokemon White preorder

The gameplay demo video is coming soon. I'll also type up a first-impression review later for VR.

Sorry about the camera cutting off randomly at the end, but I'm actually glad it did that: The gameplay video was barely under 15 minutes and there was no way I would be able to squeeze that all into this video.

Metroid: Other M- Opening Scene and Basic Gameplay (SPOILERS)

Anyone asking me to LP this game will be shot on site. (Not really. I might actually play this game through later if I'm tempted to)

So here I give basic commentary about what I see going on here and my first-impression opinion on the game. This is very bad quality though so I suggest looking elsewhere for videos about this...
