I need an easy-to-use software like Game Maker

For my summer reading, I read Flatland, and I had an idea for an open-ended project. I could make a game that's like Asteroids, but it uses melee combat and is a bit more roguelike (Though not as incredibly annoying as a roguelike i.e. fluid motion).

I could use Game Maker, but I want to at least know any alternatives.
