That is true. Never really been good at fishing, though. I always lose focus. That's also why I'm terrible at the PokéRadar...it's okay, anyways. I've been Masuda methoding for a Shiny Noibat, which has led to a number of Noibats with 31s in HP, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, and Speed, which I can always use as trade bait, so it's not a total waste.

Up to 617 eggs and nothing yet. I'm literally out of box space because the other 313 spaces are full of offspring from previous breeding endeavors. I'm going to take a break for a few hours and return to it when I feel more up to the task because this is getting tiresome.

Well after about an hour after me and Ayun traded, i decided to find a female timid charmeleon in one of my friend safaris. Well about over 30 encounters i found a shiny Braxien what sucks though its Careful nature with max HP and Sp.atk.
But after that i decided im going to try and breed for a Timid shiny protein froakie. So i hope it dosnt take me another 3 days to a get shiny this way like with honedge using the Masuda Method. Wish me luck.....I wish you luck too Grass with that Noibat your trying to get. Lets see who gets our shiny first. |

After 744 eggs, I finally got a Shiny Noibat! But now comes my moral dilemma...its stats aren't great. Timid nature is fine, and Frisk is okay for an ability, but its stats are...well, they're sub-par. They would be great for a fast bulky supporter, but such is not the case.
It lands in with 31/20/31/6/31/31, and I much prefer to have 31 in Special Attack. I could have forgiven it if its Special Attack were higher, but 6 just isn't cutting it...what should I do? Should I go for another shiny and go through all this madness again or should I stick with my guns? =_= |

I don't believe in IV/EV and breeding 50,000 times just for a nature and a 5 or 10% boost over another mon because I think that defeats the purpose of having fun.
That said, caught my first ever Shiny pokemon. Emolga, on route 10 below Geosenge. It was a couple weeks ago. Now it is a full-5 heart Amie flying death squirrel at lv.62. Will post its stats later. |

Welp, it's Friday, and I've accumulated over 4000 steps at school today so Hatching Power Level 3 will be at its maximum power and the power will regenerate at its fastest rate. Let's see if luck may be on my side tonight.

Seems like if i try to breed with the masuda method, it takes me about 3days to get a shiny with it. On to my point, I got my shiny froakie with at least Max Sp.atk and Speed....but it didnt have its protean ability which made me so mad › But i read on smogon they found an easier way to get a shiny, but it requires you to find your TSV(Trainer Shiny Value) thing and find another player that has this ESV(Egg Shiny Value) then if you trade them your egg and they hatch it, it will be shiny. So im not giving up on that once i figure it out. But it does require you to trust the person too....so its risky sometimes unless you find the right people.

Latly im trying to obtain some shinys by breeding on my White 1. But most of my attempts isnt working right. So far i was able to get these: Adamant shiny Blaze Torchic (with agility) and Charmander (with Dragondance), Modest shiny Hidden Ability Eevee (with HP fire, going to evolve him to fairy-type Eevee on Y).
But im also trying to get a shiny Sassy eevee with these Ivs: 31/31/31/9/31/0 Last edited by Cat333Pokémon; December 12, 2013 at 07:12:40 PM. |

Yes! It took me 51 eggs, but I finally got one! It's a shiny Ralts! It's also female, so I'm going with my plan to get a shiny mega Gardevoir to take down my friend's Tyranitar and Garchomp! Now to think up the rest of my team and put my plan to action! Mwahahahaha!!! >:D
Fairly large image
It's also my first shiny to actually breed/hunt for successfully so I'm super excited! :D Also, if you've seen this already, I accidentally posted this in the wrong thread, so I deleted it and moved it here, to the correct one. O.e Last edited by BluFire1337; February 10, 2014 at 07:26:07 PM. |

I was EV training and I came across a shiny geodude unfortunately it died thanks one of them using magnitude.
I then caught the murderer just so I could have it KO'd then released. Last edited by Magmaster12; February 21, 2014 at 03:45:41 PM. |

I was doing some breeding to help Cat with completing his pokedex and ended up putting an Italian ditto into the daycare and did some breeding. One of the pairs I did was his Emboarand that ditto. I got a shiny on the second one I hatched.

I had been trying to find a shiny in the Friend Safari after getting the Shiny Charm, only to realize that its rate was only increased slightly. I then went on to horde battles, as its shiny rate went up a lot (the normal increase times five Pokémon). Within six battles, I found this silly thing.
You might notice an immediate problem. Geodude knows Magnitude, which is sort of like Earthquake. In a horde battle, particularly one with where you want to catch a specific Pokémon, it comes down to pure luck for catching the one you want. Thankfully, there were only two uses of the move during the battle, one of which was by the Geodude pictured above. I thankfully did manage to catch it, as can be seen below. Sorry for the shaky pictures. Last edited by Cat333Pokémon; March 4, 2014 at 11:54:32 PM. |

Well while trying to ev train a pokemon I just got done with breeding up I run into this group, which messed up a little bit of my training as I now have to try to get speed EV reducing berries so that I can get the EVs I was going for:
Yes it's a shiney Floatzel, can't imagine who will be jealous (Also it only took about 10-15 encounters while looking to find them) |

For the past few days, I've been working on getting a usable shiny kin of a honey badger (that's Cyndaquil) through the Masuda Method. Today, I decided to shiny hunt in the Friend Safari at the same time just for the heck of it. What do I get? A shiny Magmar.
Timid, 18/31/27/15/31/19 Also, my camera broke moments before taking this picture, so it only works if I hold the lens at a certain spot. Last edited by Cat333Pokémon; March 10, 2014 at 11:54:31 PM. |

Speaking of the rarity of shiny Pokémon, I believe these are some relevant numbers as of X/Y. These numbers are rounded to the nearest integer because they are infinitesimally smaller. Some of them are estimates because they haven't yet actually been confirmed.
Wild: 1 in 4,096 Wild with Shiny Charm: 3 in 4,096 Wild horde: 5 in 4,096 Wild horde with Shiny Charm: 15 in 4,096 Masuda Method: 6 in 4,096 Masuda Method with Shiny Charm: 8 in 4,096 Friend Safari: 3 in 4,096 Friend Safari with Shiny Charm: 3 in 4,096 Chain fishing: increasing gradually from 1 in 4,096 Chain fishing with Shiny Charm: increasing gradually from 3 in 4,096 (assumed increased odds overall) PokéRadar: increasing gradually from 1 in 4,096 PokéRadar with Shiny Charm: increasing gradually from 3 in 4,096 (assumed increased odds overall) Yes, the Shiny Charm apparently does not affect the Friend Safari. Otherwise, the best way to find a shiny is through horde battles, but you're significantly limited to only a small set of Pokémon, and finding the one you want of those can be a pain. The Masuda Method (breeding two Pokémon foreign to each other by region) with the Shiny Charm seems to be the most reliable way to get a shiny with the Pokémon you want and stats/moves you want. f(k; n, p) = (nCk)(p)k(1 − p)n − k where k is the number of desired results, n is the number of trials, and p is the probability of getting a desired result, where every trial is independent of every other trial. For n independent iterations (we'll reserve "trials" to refer to encounters), the probability of getting exactly one shiny is: f(1; n, 1/4096) = (nC1)(1/4096)(4095/4096)n − 1 Exactly two shinies: f(2; n, 1/4096) = (nC2)(1/4096)2(4095/4096)n − 2 And so on for k shinies: f(k; n, 1/4096) = (nCk)(1/4096)k(4095/4096)n − k So let's reduce it for at least one shiny, by simply subtracting the case of no shinies from 1: f(k > 0; n, 1/4096) = 1 − (4095/4096)n For n = 15 (the number of iterations that the shininess is checked in a horde encounter), this equates to 0.0036558575 (while 15/4096 equates to 0.0036621094). They're incredibly close, but not identical. This leaves our final equation at: f(k > 0; n, 1/4096) = 1 − (4095/4096)n ≈ n/4096, for small n Overall, the worst problem with shiny hunting is the Gambler's Fallacy, which is where people think an outcome (in this case, a shiny) is "due" because of previous trials, especially when they don't match the odds exactly. It doesn't matter if you've hatched 5 eggs or 500 eggs, the odds are still the same that the next egg will be shiny. This is directly related to loss aversion of sunk costs, where those who have sunken a large amount of money believe they need to win it all back (in this case, time invested and the resulting shiny) by spending more time on the process, when the money (time) has already been spent getting nothing. Bet most folks don't think that shiny Pokémon involve statistics/probability, economy, psychology, philosophy/logic, and common sense. I've built a little program that simulates the number of eggs or encounters you'd need to locate a shiny Pokémon. It requires .NET 4.0, but that's already on most Windows systems. I've also included the Visual Basic .NET 2010 source code for those curious to see how it works. I feel like such a nerd. Last edited by Cat333Pokémon; March 11, 2014 at 03:52:58 PM. |

Should totally print that out and bring it to Stats tomorrow so I can tell people that class isn't useless. I remember writing a Java program that did something like that a few years ago. No idea what happened to it, though. Edit: oh yeah, people used to tell me that you were guaranteed a Shiny within 1/shiny rate Pokémon. Used to drive me crazy (now I just laugh and say "good luck").
