What is the shop?

I've noticed there is a feature (currently not available) called "shop".

What exactly is the shop supposed to be when it is available?
Use points to buy special stuff on this forum?
Use points to get special adoptables?

And finally, when is the shop going to be available?

Of course, it's not open yet and I have no idea when it actually will open. Adoptables are a low priority for me, sadly.
