October Sprite Contest

This is the 2010 October Sprite Contest.
This will be a month long contest, consisting of four categories and a bonus category.
Each category will last a week, except for the bonus category.
This contest has 8 spots open. First come, first serve.
If you enter and don't compete/drop out, you will be banned from the next contest.

Ningamer is no longer in the contest. Apparently, he can't sprite. =/ (Why even join the contest?)
Seriously... Tropius isn't the best spriter in the world, but I'm surprised how hard he's at least trying.
Even when his PokeBalls are considered crap to other spriters, I still like them.

Categories for the Contest

Category One -
Generation starter set of PokeBalls (ex: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle)

Examples used are Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon
All submissions must be posted in thread by October 8. Any later submissions will not be accepted.

Category Two -
Two fusions (open*) with back sprites

Examples used is a Miltank+Roserade fusion and Sandshrew+Quilava fusion (Background is optional.)
All submissions must be posted in thread by October 12. Any later submissions will not be accepted.
* Open is any two of your choice.

Category Three -
Male and Female cosplay trainers ("couple" Pokemon; ex: Plusle/Minun)

Example used is Gallade and Gardevoir with the Couple sprite. You do not have to use the Couple sprite or any trainer sprite that are related, ex, the male and female Ace Trainers.
All submissions must be posted in thread by October 18. Any later submissions will not be accepted.

Category Four -
Final generation set of Chaos (ex: Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise)

Examples used are the Regis. Not the final starter set, but since we're limited, all I could do.
All submissions must be posted in thread by October 25. Any later submissions will not be accepted.

Bonus Category
Dress up/recolor a Pokemon in a Halloween costume or Halloween themed.

Examples used are Seedot, Nuzleaf and Shiftry zombies. You don't have to add a background.
All submissions are due a week after Category Four is completed. Since this is a difficult category, you will have all of the contest time to create. You only have to submit one. This category is OPTIONAL.

I used the cheerleader from Black and White and made them fossilised. I like the Cranidos one XD

(pff, you never said I couldn't use the evolutions of the starters. Like underlining the word magically implies that they have to be basic. Could it kill you to respect a little creativit-- oh, wait, yeah, it would)

You know, I find it sort of weird that we get more points for understanding your vague descriptions than actually making good sprites.

In case you couldn't guess, it's Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile! Three notes...
I'm disappointed by Cyndaquil, but I can't do any better...
And does Totoball really count as a Pokéball? I used the Pokéball as a base, but It's kinda got lost.
These are my first "Pokéball" sprites.

CATEGORY 1: STARTER POKEBALLS



Well I haven't done a ton of Pokeballs, but I think these ones came out all right! The Sinnoh starters don't have a ton of features, but I used all that I could!

CATEGORY 2: POKEMON FUSIONS



They came out nice enough, I really prefer Gardevoir2 over Exegguton.

CATEGORY 3: COSPLAY TRAINERS



Huh boy. This one was a little tough, but it was fun nonetheless!

Judging is done within three categories: Creativity, Interpretation, and Overall Spriting.

Category 1: Starter PokeBalls    

1. Ultimazone  

Creativity - 4/5 - Everyone forgets about the Hoenn starters. I can tell what version sprites you used and it's well done since the sprites aren't that great.

Interpretation - 5/5 - You were asked to make starter PokeBalls, and these are in fact starter Pokemon.

Overall Spriting - 3/5 - I had to mark off for the little green dots on Torchic's Ball and the large green dot on Mudkip's Ball. Overall, these are awesome for a first time. It's the conflicting colors on the bright orange that is distracting.

2. Idno58 

Creativity - 3/5 - I marked off because I don't see PokeBalls at first. I see the huge additions. Although it's different to do final forms, it's not that creative since they're everywhere.

Interpretation - 2/5 - Since when did you ever start with a Charizard? I underlined "starter" for a reason. One of my reasons was stared above, the additions totally overshadow the PokeBall. 

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - There are some minor defects, but nothing too major.

3. RotomGuy 

Creativity - 5/5 - I did not expect to see the 5th Generation Pokemon here. Well done!

Interpretation - 2/5 - However, they are not starter Pokemon. They are the evolved forms.

Overall Spriting - 5/5 - I see absolutely nothing wrong with these. They're beautiful.

4. NismoZ   

Creativity - 4/5 - Kanto starters! This is hard for me, but since there was a limited choice, I'll let you have this one. 

Interpretation - 5/5 - You can't go wrong with the originals.

Overall Spriting - 5/5 - These PokeBalls are beautiful. There are a few iffy spots, like the tan spot for Charmander's chest, but I hardly notice it.

5. Ningamer   

Creativity - 4/5 - You took elements from the Pokemon you chose and used them well. The only thing that hurt you is Totodile's jaw.

Interpretation - 5/5 - These are the Johto starter Pokemon.

Overall Spriting - 3/5 - Sorry, I have to count off on the Totodile PokeBall. I can't even tell it's a PokeBall.

6. The Tropius of Tropius 

Creativity - 3/5 - These are good for slightly abstract PokeBalls, sadly, that was the case.

Interpretation - 3/5 - Pikachu is a starter in Yellow, but it's not a starter Pokemon. There are tons in the games in the wild, not just one per game.

Overall Spriting - 2/5 - You will need some basic Paint knowledge. Instead of blowing up the image, use the Magnifying Glass tool.

7. Alakazamaster 

Creativity - 5/5 - Right you are. The Sinnoh starters are a little bland on usable features, but you pulled it off.

Interpretation - 5/5 - These are definately the Sinnoh starter Pokemon.

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - Chimchar's hair is the only thing that got to me. I'm not sure if the outline could have been darkened or if it needed more shading; something was amiss.

Category 2: Front/Back Fusion    

1. Ultimazone  

Creativity - 3/5 - Interesting Pokemon choices, but what you fused was a little too simple. The B/W back sprites make this a lot easier than with earlier generations.

Interpretation - 5/5 - Indeed a front and back fusion.

Overall Spriting - 3/5 - Like I said before, a little too simple. You forgot some of the outlines to recolor.

2. Idno58 

Creativity - 1/5 - You got just one point since the only fusion I see is the Seviper tail you tacked on. The other is just a recolor.

Interpretation - 2/5 - You didn't understand this at all.

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - Even though you failed this category, you sprited pretty well, even if you just recolored.

3. RotomGuy 

Creativity - 5/5 - Very nice. Taking similar shaped Pokemon and fusing them. I like them.

Interpretation - 5/5 - These are great fusions.

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - I noticed you forgot the outline recolor on Munchbat. It's not too terrible, but it's somewhat noticable.

4. NismoZ   

Creativity - 5/5 - Although the two Fire Pokemon fusion is a little played out... The fusion with Shedinja is awesome. I've never seen a Shedinja fusion before.

Interpretation - 5/5 - Two fusions, front and back.

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - Slight count off because the first fusion's front and back sprite are different colors. Not sure if that's how the Cyndaquil is in game.

5. The Tropius of Tropius 

Creativity - 4/5 - Very interesting choices, but the first isn't really much of a fusion.

Interpretation - 4/5 - Fusions ahoy!

Overall Spriting - 3/5 - While you may not be the best spriter in the world, these are really good. The first isn't much of a fusion, but the second is awesome. It's really a challenging fusion and you pulled it off nicely.

6. Alakazamaster 

Creativity - 4/5 - I would have never thought to use the egg shapes on Exeggcutor like that.

Interpretation - 5/5 - Not much of fusing, but technically fusions.

Overall Spriting - 3/5 - I can't give praise to Gardevoir2 since it's just the head glued on the body, but the other is awesome. The back sprite too.

Category 3: Duo Cosplayers    

1. Ultimazone  

Creativity - 3/5 - It's creative... but isn't one blue and green?

Interpretation - 3/5 - You understood half of the category.

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - Not bad. I see some minor flaws in shading, but I'm not a big fan of the B/W sprites.

2. Idno58 

Creativity - 3/5 - Pretty common "couple", but I can't tell if they're Nidoran, or Rino and Rina.

Interpretation - 5/5 - Simple, but a couple.

Overall Spriting - 3/5 - I have to squint my eyes at what you did. Try a DS version of sprite?

3. RotomGuy 

Creativity - 4/5 - Interesting.

Interpretation - 5/5 - Cranidos and Shieldon are a couple.

Overall Spriting - 2/5 - You stumbled and fell. I couldn't even tell the girl is suppose to be Cranidos and the guy just has a Shieldon mask on.

4. NismoZ   

Creativity - 5/5 - Legendary pair for legendary sprites.

Interpretation - 5/5 - Even as an obvious pair, nicely sprited.

Overall Spriting - 5/5 - Perfect. Most people just butcher the sprite and paste them on the trainer. Yeah, you did some, but you also scratched some, which I greatly approve. I would have liked to see the "diamond" and "pearl" featured on each Pokemon and maybe their tails, but even without them, these work really well.

Creativity - 4/5 - Another fossil set. Goodie!

Interpretation - 5/5 - Nicely understood and good job on the trainers not being related.

Overall Spriting - 4/5 - Some flaws, but that could be because of bad sprites. I would like to have seen some blue on the Omastar trainer. The Kabutops girl makes me giggle. She looks so happy.
