Default Should we Move?

Recently, I've heard rumors from Cat and KingofKYA that they are considering moving Floatzel.net/VR to a new host. Do you think we should?

Yeah, now that the downtime is coming back, I think we are going to move.

As long as we are going to evade all the errors that are occurring, then yeah... it is better for us to move.

By moving to a new host, which is probably going to be better than the existing one, the irritating errors will hopefully stop.
So, I say yes for moving.

Yes, moving to a better host.

And Yoshi, how can I make up my mind when the server can't make up its mind for when to give errors?

And that's easy cat: If you get a lot of errors in one month, move.

Well think and are, are two COMPLETELY different things!
Its either a yes, or no.

Also, i haven't gotten any errors since last week. But if the errors do continue to happen very frequently, we should just move.

How about this: Every time there is an error when we log in, we write down the time, location we're in (I.E.: Sowthwest florida), And what the error states in a .txt file. Then, we copy and paste it at the end of the month to posts in an error counting thread, and we count the errors. If they reach a certain number, then we move.

It's a bit of work, but I'd say it would be worth it.

This doesn't require the participation of the entire forum, though. We could have it as just staff. I mean, there WILL be multiple entries for the same error; so the less people there are, the more accurate.

Not really. I've been waiting for the errors EST lately and I find the errors happen ABOUT 12:00 am EST. Whoever says no move is either in 2 categories:

1. The ones who are either sleeping or not online during errors.

OR

2. The ones who have no idea what a database error is. o_O

I am all for a move, so if it comes to that, we will be moving. But it has to be decided soon as to give us time to make sure the move worked. We don't want to pay for two months on the new host and the old host at the same time.

Why do you care if it's too much work? o.O. Cat and KingofKYA do all the server work. If you really want to help him, suggest ideas and maybe different server hosts instead of having a "un-optimistic" attitude towards this.

Once again, sorry for the blunt statement. It just irritates me that we don't have a more supportive attitude.

What date will the new move be on? The way I see it, we would be far better off to get it out of the way before March 14, since the site will likely get plenty of traffic then, or, barring that, to have the move a fair amount of time after.

I agree. That's a very important date for this site. The forum must be stable by that date.

Ugh, we'd probably have major problems if we don;t move by March 14.

So, we'll move soon, then?

How long would the server take to move? I would suggest a weekend date, but I think Cat has a pretty open schedule, and of course it is ultimately his choice. How much advance notice will we have?

I'll try to tell you as soon as I learn the exact date. According to KYA, it shouldn't take more than a couple hours (due to it going VPS to VPS).

I couldn't care either way as long as the forum still freaking WORKS. If that's the case then I'm all for moving.

Its worth noting that the errors are trackable; you simply need to write to a text file or otherwise trigger a log when a 503 occurs (see CI's 404 and 403 pages). The same thing can be done with any error as long as PHP is still being processed (which may or may not be true).

Excellent news! When (not if) we move, downtime should be less than 10 minutes due to synchronization! It will likely be this weekend.

I've never gotten a error before. Maybe it's cause I login like every 3 days, or maybe I live in a diff timezone..

Hey Cat, we need to talk over MSN concerning this issue.
I've got some things to point out.

Alright, it's in testing right now, but not BurstNET. We're testing a cloud-type of hosting called VPS.NET, which lets you test by paying just $2 a day (for the plan we're looking at).

This server is terrible for the arcade because of how much redirecting and such is done.

We're not on the new server yet. We have synchronized testing (where everything that occurs on the Fivebean server occurs on the new one as well.

That can be a more generic problem - after 2 minutes the server would just quit. The real problem is a browser memory problem, which means you simply have to refresh or click the link again.

You mean the server was down or just that MySQL died (the latter only existing when you visit the Forums, not Floatzel.net or Crystal Islands, except for the Pokedexes, Topsites, and PokeAdoptables).

MySQL keeps crashing, the CPU keeps getting used by others, and memory keeps spiking.

Another important bump. Warning: all-caps.

FIVEBEAN, YOU SUCK! 57% UPTIME DOES NOT SHOW A GOOD HOSTING COMPANY. YOUR OVERSELLING IS TERRIBLE, YOUR RELIABILITY IS AWFUL, AND I DON'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW HOW BAD PEOPLE WITH BUSINESSES ON YOUR SERVER HAVE IT!

Yes, that 57% is accurate. That's the uptime for yesterday. Today's uptime, given the server will be up for the rest of the day, is already at 70%.
