Default So it looks like my external disk's about to die or something

While I was attempting a Windows Backup session, I got so many disconnections, it's not even funny. I am beginning to suspect that the USB controller within the drive might be failing, given that the drive is perfectly stationary.

My wallet's gonna cry

(What brand to suggest?)

I've had a couple problems involving various computers and a specific few hard drives. Through testing, I found out that these were the problems:
  • Bad cable. Sometimes they really are cheaply made.
  • Bad USB connector. This applies to both the computer and the hard drive.
  • Bad hard drive. Might as well write a eulogy.

Given that using my phone's USB 2 cable worked well for an entire backup session, seems like it's the cable. Time to head out and get a replacement cable...

At least it's the cheap part. Losing a hard drive is annoying.

Heh.

Now to do a CHKDSK just in case, but it seems like the disconnections are gone... and the waiting time seems to be cut, too. Maybe the old cable wasn't supplying enough power these days... right?

Huh. The disk somehow disconnected while trying to backup today.

...I think I'm out $80 when my mum does the monthly remittance. Might be the disk this time around.
