Spriting School of VR!
Ever see all those amazing sprites in people's Signatures and all over Sprite Shops? Tired of asking people to make them for you? Want to learn how to make them yourself?
Well then this is the place for you! So, how does this work? It's quite simple, really. Just post here in the thread saying you want to enroll in a class. A teacher will then take you in as their student soon after. Your teacher will be responsible for helping you improve your spriting techniques. You may only take 1 class at a time. Some classes require you to complete other classes, though. At the end of every class, your teacher will supply you with an exam. If you pass, you may go on and take other classes. When you have passed 5 different classes, you may apply to become a teacher. You will only teach the classes you have passed, and may or may not be accepted. mister out of state college professor here
I do hope you are teaching your most advanced students spriting from scratch. many great spriters never work on 100% original art simply because they were never told to do so, and it's a real shame we lose so many in that field |

First some guidelines: - Always save as .PNG or .GIF. - Never save as .JPG - When recoloring, always recolor lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc. - Read the tutorial on the first page to learn how to recolor. Now do: Squirtle as Charmander Metapod as Kakuna Growlithe as Butterfree Quote:

Alright. Basic Recolors is what you'll start at. First some guidelines. - Always save as .PNG or .GIF. - Never save as .JPG - When recoloring, always recolor lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc. - Read the tutorial on the first page to learn how to recolor. Your first assignment is: - Treecko as Mudkip - Poocyena as Ekans - Mareep as Magikarp The classes will actually take place here. First some guidelines. - Always save as .PNG or .GIF - Never, ever, in any way save as .JPG. It destroys the sprites quality. - Use at least 4 to 6 shades in Infernoes. You may go up to more, but they won't look as good. Read the Infernoes tutorial on the first page and then do these. Your first assignment will be. - Monochrome Treecko (Black to White) - Aqua Torchic - Flaming Mudkip Alright. I'll start you off First some guidelines: - Always save as .PNG or .GIF. - Never save as .JPG - When recoloring, always recolor lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc. - Read the tutorial on the first page to learn how to recolor. Then do: Piplup as Chimchar Burmy as Turtwig Kricketot as Glameow Well, first things first. Some guidelines: - Always save as .PNG or .GIF. - Never save as .JPG - When recoloring, always recolor lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc. - Read the tutorial on the first page to learn how to recolor. Then do: Pikachu as Marill Magby as Elekid Cascoon as Metapod |

I circled these outlines in red. I also put your Pikachu's outline colors next to Marill's actual outline colors. It's not that big of a problem to make you re-do it, just make sure you don't make the same mistake again. Anyways, finish your other assignments and then post them. |

Just from quick examination, you can see you put gray outlines again on the Cascoon. When you recolor the outlines, you'll want to have them sort of blend in with the sprite's colors. You don't want the outlines to stand out much on the sprite's lighter colors.
With the Magby, this isn't the case though. The outlines look fine and they "blend in" with the colors. They don't stand out much. Why you used gray outlines on the Cascoon and not Magby, i don't know. Now, next assignment. Poochyena as Zigzagoon Ponyta as Ekans Monferno as Marshtomp |

Ahh. Very nice.
You seem to have gotten over your outline problem. Now, I noticed that when you recolor you don't recolor everything. For example, you didn't recolor the flames on Ponyta and Monferno. When you recolor you wanna recolor everything possible. Flames, markings, etc. Make sure you do that next time. Next do: Pillowswine as Meowth Dodrio as Seviper One Pokemon of your choice as one legendary of your choice |

The little drop tool that is circled is the eyedrop tool. Zoom x8 is circled as well. Zooming in x8 is just zooming in to the max. To zoom you select the magnifying glass tool, and then pick how much you want to zoom in. Your paint should look like that or similiar. Quote:
Your next assignment is: Dunsparce as Murkrow Yanmega as Salamence Gyarados as Milotic Lopunny as Gardevoir |

Your sprites are good, you've got everything down. your next assignment is: Ledian as Arbok Ariados as Spinarak Goldeen as Clefable Quote:
Next assignments is: Charizard as Blastoise Starmie as Hypno Slowking as Chansey Sure. First things first. - Always save as .PNG or .GIF. - Never save as .JPG - When recoloring, always recolor lightest shade to lightest, darkest to darkest, etc. - Read the tutorial on the first page to learn how to recolor. Now do: Snivy as Oshawott Tepig as Squirtle Charmander as Bulbasaur The Squritle and Metapod are good. The only thing I saw wrong was the Growlithe. The only thing you really recolored was it's body. You kept it's mane and ears the same color. When you recolor you want to recolor everything possible. Tails, ears, stripes, etc. Next assignment: Mothim as Beedrill Huntail as Gorebyss Delibird as Spheal Quote:
Your next assignments is: Banette as Graveler Exploud as Magnezone Blissey as Sunflora Like all your other assignments, this one was excellent. The only thing I noticed was that on your Lopunny's outlines, there was 3 blue pixels surrounding the green ears. One more assignment and then you'll have an exam: Ramaprdos as Charizard Hippowdon as Blastoise Latias as Latios |

One more assignment and then you get an exam: Metagross as Scizor Steelix as Machamp Haxorus as Sazandora Quote:
Secondly, the outlines aren't recolored. You still have Shaymin's green and gray outlines on it. If you look at everybody else's sprites, you can see they have the outlines recolored to blend with the newer colors. Just keep that in mind when you recolor. Quote:
One more assignment and then an exam: Sazandora as Ulgamoth Pendoraa as Haxorus Uxie as Mesprit |

Everything looks fine, except it looks like you forgot to recolor a major part of Sazandora. It's "fur looks like it was left not colored. Like I told Rotom, it's okay if you re-use colors if you ran out of them.
Now for your exam: Dialga as Palkia Regigigas as Darkrai Ho-Oh as lugia Deoxys as Rayquaza Last edited by Shiny; March 6, 2011 at 04:32:21 PM. |

EDIT:i have done another one: is it better?i really tried to make it good but always i'm doing something wrong. it's a lucario with raiku's colors. EDIT 2:i edited the sprite and i made the outlines.but what do you mean shade? Last edited by lucarioLOVER; March 7, 2011 at 12:07:15 AM. |

DONE! Tyranitar: I was clever with the belly and made the bottom part yellow, like Garchomp. Shaymin: This was fun 8) Arcanine: The reason the outline was all black is because Mightyena has 4 shades, will Arcanine was 6. So, I had to make the lightest shade. BTW, you might actually wanna make a Re-Type class now you have a tutorial for it. Last edited by RotomGuy; March 7, 2011 at 08:35:20 AM. |

Well that was hard. Zekrom was a nightmare, I'm sure the artists had horrific looks when they had to sprite him. anyways, I'm done.
just for extra credit (or to make up for the horrible Zekrom), I did Zoroark as Dialga: Oh, and I've set up a Recolor shop. ninja'd. Last edited by shinyarceus4; March 7, 2011 at 01:04:57 PM. |

What would you like to take next? As for the Lucario, I agree, it could use some blue in it. It looks like he got covered in Cheeto covering. XD. I can't really count it as extra credit, since extra credit is virtually useless in here. Quote:
Time for exam: Attack Deoxys as Groudon Rayquaza as Kyogre Heatran as Cresselia Giratina as Dialga The other recolors you did are very good also. My favorite is the Bayleef. it shows a good example of an advanced recolor. The trainers are also very good to. They don't look like you just propped parts of dialga and palkia onto a random trainer sprite. The trainers actually go with the Pokemon, and the parts are fused good. Quote:
And by shade I mean like the shadows. Sprites in general aren't just one color. They have shading used to give it a 3D type effect. If you have trouble shading think of it as this: You have a light on the sprite and wherever the light is touching, that area is lighter. Where it isn't touching, that area is darker. i.e.: A Wailord's back would be bright blue as the light is aiming and touching it's back. Whereas it's belly would be a dark blue as the light isn't touching or coming near it. Shading isn't that easy to learn as a beginner. It requires practice and patience. I still ahve trouble with shading now a days. Quote:

Palkia as Darkrai Kyogre as Groudon Regigigas as Suicune Aricuno as Zapdos Oh yeah, and thanks for reminding me to add Re-Types. I coulda sworn I added it. o,o Last edited by Shiny; March 7, 2011 at 04:13:40 PM. |

Now do: Monochrome Metang Aqua Golbat Flaming Woobat It looks better. You saved the shading, but the outliens aren't changed. I can still see it's red outlines on it's green body.... |

The Sunflora is good, but the outlines around it's petals on the head look weird. The Ledian is good too, but again, it has an outline problem. The outlines on it's wings are the problem. It's orange wing has blue outlines on it, when they should be orange. And your sprites aren't bad. They're actually good for a beginner like you. I've seen worse than this. :3 Next do: Zigzagoon as Grovyle Marshtomp as Dewott Monferno as Croconaw |

Allright, first recolors I've done in a while! Zangoose's outlines were hard, but other than that they were pretty easy. NOTE: Sorry, but they might be JPEG. My version of Paint says nothing about PNGs or JPEGs, but if they are, sorry. EDIT: So sorry, I thought you said ZANGOOSE as Seviper, not ZIGZAGOON. SO SORRY! I'll try to get the recolor up as soon as I can tomorow. Last edited by The Tropius of Tropiuses; March 11, 2011 at 07:02:50 PM. |

Allright, finished my sprites.
Herdier as Whirlpede Purplegasam! This was one of the harder ones, but mainly due to Herdier's muzzle mixing with his face. Dewott as Pignite The easiest one for me. I was thinking of reclolring his hands, but then i thought they would mix with his, uh, "belt". Servine as Purrloin It's in the middle in terms of difficulty. 'Nothing much I can say about it. |
