Default TO EVERYONE: Scheduled Move

This information is for all forum members. For the next few days, the forum may drop offline. As soon as March 1 hits, I'm getting hosting from a new service. I am on the absolute highest hosting plan provided by Fivebean now...AND IT SUCKS! Fivebean apparently oversells their servers, meaning that there are too many site on each server. THAT is the real reason why the fatal errors, database errors, 503s (with the exception of the database backup), 500s, server not found errors, reboots, and everything else: because Fivebean is a terrible hosting company for larger sites.

So, we're moving to BurstNET, which we hope will be better. And here's the schedule:

First, Sunny's tournament WILL MOST LIKELY BE POSTPONED. Second, we'll be moving in the first week of March. ALL HOSTED SITES, EXPECT DOWNTIME OF UP TO 24 HOURS. Third, the forum may be closed during this transitional period.

I would say that it would be better if we just made our own webserver (Mac Pros look delicious for that.), so that way we can have a relatively free-er alternative without nearly as many problems.

Of course, if BurstNET proves to be good, then kudos to your excellent server researching skills.

For a personal family website, it might be okay to do that. However, running a home server for a site even as big as Mario Minus World (what eventually turned into Floatzel.Net) was in early 2007 would prove difficult. First, you need HUGE upstream bandwidth to handle something of this size. Second, you need to have a stable machine that won't crash if memory is overloaded. Finally, you can't have anything else on this line. So, you'll need a dedicated T1 line only to run the server, in addition to your regular line. That could reach upwards to $100 a month, plus the cost of the machine.
Approx. Cost:
$1000-2000 setup fee (buying the machine)
$50 per month (for the dedicated line)

Renting a server (or part of a server) is a better choice because they have loads of bandwidth and your ISP won't hound you for using so much of it. The only downsides are that you are limited in service and bandwidth. However, you can move at any time you please and you aren't glued to one machine to do your hosting.
Approx. Cost:
$0 setup fee (may be included with some plans, but typically not more than $50)
$15-500 per month (depending on the plan)

Finally, the best choice (but not for us yet) would be to actually purchase a server rack and pay a much lower holding and bandwidth fee. Then, you physically own the computer your site is hosted on, you can use as much of it as you want, the hosting company can't suddenly change the plans to allot a different amount of CPU, and outages are only based when the farm loses connection. Unfortunately, you are tied to that machine. Sure, you can move it to another location, but you won't be able to upgrade without buying a new rack (or having someone install stuff onto it). The greatest benefit, though, is being able to pay far lower monthly after your initial setup fee (buying the rack).
Approx. Cost:
$500-5000 setup fee (buying the rack)
$20-100 per month (depending on the bitrate bandwidth)

Hmm, it's good that I know this, at least.

It should be worth it when all of the errors are gone.

Guys this is Cat's final idea. I doubt he isn't going to be using any other server. And BTW don't try to suggest servers that would make Cat PENNILESS. -_-

It's got to be better than Fivebean, and at least it's not GoDaddy.

I'm guessing it's main consumer base is mostly businesses, which is why it looks weird to some.

*ANYWAY*

Is it possible we can still have the tourney tomorrow? And if not do you know when it will be postponed until?

I failed to properly advertise the tournament, so I postponed it to give Sunny a chance for more members.

Well, technically Cat's right hand is KYA, and his left is Yoshi. James must be Cat's left foot.

Wait, where am I in all this?

Another server move? As long as it's still affordable for the administrat- Cat and it works well, then we've got something good.

Because Fivebean may have internally moved my account to a less-utilized machine.

Good to see that Fivebean is actually noticing when it's overloading its servers.
