Default Kanji Mode

While it has been stated that kanji is in Pokemon Black and White to appeal to an older generation. In a interview with Mr. Masuda's Sugimori, it was reviled that Kanji can be turned off or on depending on the user's preference.

I'm sorry, but why does this matter? Does the English versions use Kanji too?

Just because you asked, no.
It's not a helpful feature if NO ONE CAN READ IT!

It's helpful for the Japanese players, who their version of the game actually comes out in less than 8 days. When was Pokémon restricted to English users? Must've missed the memo.

Kanji is one of the Japanese alphabets. Up until now, all Pokémon games in Japan have used Hiragana and Katakana.

To elebrate a little more on this, Kanji are the Chinese characters used in Japanese to repesent words or ideas rather than sounds. There are four different ways to write something in Japanese.

Examples of the word Cat:
Kanji: 猫
Hiragana: ねこ
Katakana: ネコ
Romaji: neko

Romaji is the Romanization of the "symbols" of the Japanese alphabet.

Hiragana is basically what everything is written in if it is not written in Kanji. Katakana are used for foreign words like アメリカ (America), or made up words like ポケモン (Pokemon)

To add to what Buoysel and Ningamer said, since there is a kanji for each word, most little kids don't know many kanji. Hiragana and katakana are like alphabets, but Kanji is more like a sophisticated way of spelling things.
