Default 2-D Mario or 3-D Mario?

Note that 2-D also covers "2.5-D," which is 3-D effects on a 2-D plane.

So, platforms vs., well, world.

The platformers have always had that addictive replay value, while the 3-D ones have more of a plot. As an example of that, I will show you the plot changes between Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64.
Spoiler Alert:
In Super Mario Bros., all of the people in the Mushroom Kingdom, minus Mario, the Princess, and seven Mushroom Retainers (Yes, that's what they're called in that game), have been transformed into different kinds of blocks.

In Super Mario 64, there are no blocks to be seen. Princess Peach (No longer Toadstool) wanted Mario to come to her castle for a cake. She gets captured by Bowser (there's a surprise), but this time, instead of going right up to Bowser and hitting a conveniently placed axe, he has to collect at least 70 Stars, and then go right up to Bowser, but this time defeat him physically. Then he gets his cake. (I suck at Super Mario 64's plot)

The 3-D games also have more gimmicks that you could never be able to do in 2-D.

DEBATE.

EDIT: Added a poll.

3D. I've always loved games with awesome graphics. I agree that the 3D Mario games have more plot, and the plot is really what keeps me addicted.

3D. I own both Super Mario Galaxies and New Super Mario Bros Wii, and I much prefer the galaxy titles.

3D, mostly due to my love of Sunshine. I'm cool at 2D though, at least one of two games I can actually beat my friend at, and I've finished every 2D mario to date with the exception of NSMB Wii.

3D, mostly to the fact that I think Mario 64 is a really amazing video game that is just fantastic when playing through it for the first time.

It depends on what I'm in the mood to play. 3D if I'm in an exploring mood, and 2D if I'm in a linear mood.

Obviously everyone want's the game to be in 3-D since it hasn't been shown in 3-D, I myself would like it to be in 3-D.

I grew up on 2-D Mario but I also like 3-D Mario, though SMB 1-3 and SMW are my childhood. That said so is SMRPG and SM64.

Going to give the nod to 2-D.

3-D. The storylines are great, though the 2-D games bring back a lot of memories.

I like 3D because you can do things you can never can do in 2D. Although 2D was really fun to play and it brings back the memories. But I would judge the Mario game more on gameplay than if it's 3D or not.

Hmm... I prefer 3D - It's much more open, and there's loads to do. I probably don't like the 2D games because I'm bad at them! :3

2-D Since I grew up playing SMB 1-3, SMW, SMW2, and SML. I like the 3-D ones too.

I say 3D because think about how awesome that would be, also I love 3D games and Mario would be a great addition to the 3D world!

I sort of have a preference to platformers, because I mainly play games on a 2D axis. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kirby Super Star Ultra, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, etc. So my vote goes for 2D Mario, although 3D Mario games are great as well (Too bad I don't have Super Mario Galaxy 2. :x).

I believe all types of Marios have something special.
The 2D ones have a great sense of platforming and a need for speed and completion.
The 3D ones have a sense of adventure and exploring a whole new place.
It's hard to hate and pick favorites.

Both excellent, it really depends on the quality of the games themselves. I'll say 2D since I generally have more fun with those.

While all Mario games in general, whether 2-D or 3-D, are exceptional in many different ways, I still slightly prefer the 3-D ones a little bit more; you can do a lot of moves on them which you wouldn't be able to perform in 2-D games, while the environments in 3-D games look much more vivid, stunning and 'realistic'. They also tend to give you this sense of exploration which makes you want to experiment with different things and discover secret places which are not too predictable (like in many 2-D games).

s everyone else pretty much said, both are great, but I'd have to go with 2D, but only because just about every 2D mario game has been remade or ported to a portable system, while only SM64 has out of the 3D ones.
